'Wolves Drop Series Finale to Baysox

June 21, 2012 - Eastern League (EL1)
Erie SeaWolves News Release

The SeaWolves spent the afternoon playing catch up, before eventually falling to the Bowie Baysox, 8-5. Erie starter Ramon Garcia struggled from the outset, giving up three first inning runs (one earned). Garcia would only last three innings, giving up five runs (three earned) on seven hits and two walks, while tallying three strikeouts.

In the first, Bowie second baseman Jonathan Schoop reached on a one-out error by Niuman Romero. Back-to-back singles by Josh Barfield and Robbie Widlansky loaded the bases for Manny Machado, who delivered a two-run single. Two batters later, Zelous Wheeler smacked a double to left, scoring Widlansky and giving the Baysox the early 3-0 lead.

The first three batters for Erie reached on singles to start the bottom of the first, loading the bases for the power hitting Jordan Lennerton. Bowie starter Sean Gleason got Lennerton to strike out swinging, then got Rawley Bishop to ground into a force out to short, scoring one Erie run, and escaped the jam by getting Tony Plagman to fly out to center.

Garcia retired the first two Baysox hitters in the second inning, before giving up an opposite field homer to Schoop, his fourth on the year. Bowie added another run off of Garcia in the third, when Machado crushed a solo homerun to left, his fourth, giving Bowie a 5-1 lead. In the fourth, Barfield roped a one-out double off of Erie reliever, Michael Morrison, and scored on Machado two-out single.

The 'Wolves clawed their way back in the bottom of the fourth. Lennerton led off with his thirteenth homer of the year. Bishop then singled, and scored on a triple down the first base line by Plagman. Catcher Luis Alberto Sanz roped a two-out single to left, scoring Plagman and cutting the Bowie lead to 6-4. In the seventh, Romero led off with a double, advanced to third on a fly out by Corey Jones, and scored on an infield single by Nick Castellanos, bringing Erie to within one run, 6-5.

That's as close as Erie would get. In the eighth, Bowie center fielder Antoan Richardson reached on a bunt single, stole second, his eleventh steal, and scored on a Widlansky single. The Baysox added one more insurance run in the ninth on Allan de San Miguel's fourth homerun of the year. The 'Wolves went 1-2-3 in the ninth, sealing a Bowie victory.

The win went to Gleason (2-1), who worked five innings, giving up four runs on seven hits and one walk, with three strikeouts. The loss went to Garcia (5-6). Greg Burke picked up his fourteenth save for Bowie, throwing two perfect innings. Bowie improves to 33-37 on the year, while Erie falls back to .500, at 35-35.

Erie welcomes the Binghamton Mets (New York Mets) to town on Friday, with a 7:05 pm game. Kelvin De La Cruz (4-6, 3.45 ERA) takes the mound for Erie, facing off against Binghamton starter Darin Gorski (4-4, 4.50).
