Game #70 - Thursday, June 21, 2012

Canal Park - Akron, OH - 7:05 PM

LAST GAMES: The B-Mets split a doubleheader against the Akron Aeros last night at Canal Park, losing the opener by a 2-0 score before taking the nightcap by a 5-1 final. A pair of defensive misplays by Binghamton's infield allowed both runs to score in the opening loss. RHP Zack Wheelertook the hard-luck defeat, allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits over six innings. It was the first time Binghamton has lost behind Wheeler in seven starts, dating back to April 24. It was also the B-Mets eighth shutout loss of the season and second versus the Aeros. RHP Cory Mazzoniled the way in the nightcap, tossing his first career complete-game victory in his Double-A debut. The righty allowed just one unearned run on five hits over seven innings. After allowing one run in the first, he faced just two over the minimum over his final six shutout innings. He struck out four and walked one. Kai Gronauer broke a tie-game by lining a two-run single off the back of Akron starter Francisco Jimenez in Binghamton's four-run fourth inning.

STARTING PITCHING MATCHUP: RHP Gonzalez Germen (3-4, 4.05) makes his seventh start of the season for the B-Mets and second against the Aeros. Germen has won his last two starts, most recently defeating the Altoona Curve on June 15. He allowed three runs (one earned) on eight hits over six innings in a game the B-Mets took 4-3 in comeback fashion. The righty allowed six runs (four earned) over five innings in a loss to Akron on June 1. German fanned six and did not issue a walk. Germen was promoted from St. Lucie (High-A) on May 4 to fill-in when Zack Wheeler went on the disabled list. Germen went 3-0 with a 3.04 ERA in five games (four starts) with St. Lucie before his promotion.

LHP Giovanni Soto (5-3, 3.99) takes the mound for his team-leading 14th start of the season and second versus the B-Mets. Soto tossed a complete-game against the Reading Phillies in his most recent start on June 16, but suffered the loss. The southpaw surrendered two runs on five hits over six innings in game one of a doubleheader. He matched a season-high with nine strikeouts. Soto baffled the B-Mets for seven innings in a win on May 2. He allowed just one run on four hits and fanned nine. Originally drafted by the Tigers in 2009, Soto was traded to the Indians in exchange for SS Jhonny Peralta in July 2010.

JOINING THE CLUB: Starter Cory Mazzoni became the third B-Met starting pitcher this season to earn a win in his Double-A debut. He joins Greg Peavey and Darin Gorski who performed the feat in April.

SNAPPING OUT OF IT: Binghamton's win in the nightcap last night snapped a four-game losing streak, their longest of the season. It also ended the Aeros' 13-game winning streak at home. It was just the fourth time in twelve meetings that the B-Mets scored more than two runs versus Akron.

ROSTER FACELIFT: Over the last two days, the New York Mets have made 11 transactions involving the Binghamton Mets. A full rundown of the moves can be found in the Transactions Section of the game notes located on page 17.

REINFORCEMENTS FROM ST. LUCIE: The B-Mets welcome in three new position players from the Florida State League First Half Champion St. Lucie Mets (High-A). Infielders Wilmer Flores and Wilfredo Tovar along with C Francisco Pena officially join the B-Mets today.

WELCOME BACK: The B-Mets also welcome back SS Sean Kazmar who returns after logging eleven games with the Buffalo Bisons (AAA).

REPRESENTING THE NEW YORK METS: Earlier today Major League Baseball announced the US and World Team rosters for the All-Star Futures Game to be played on July 8th in Kansas City. B-Mets starting pitcher Zack Wheelerwill join the US team, while new B-Met Wilmer Flores will play for the World team.

NEXT GAME PREVIEW: The B-Mets head to Jerry Uht Park to start a four-game series against the Erie SeaWolves tomorrow night at 7:05 PM.
