Cole Named to 2012 SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game

June 21, 2012 - Eastern League (EL1)
Altoona Curve News Release

CURVE, Pa. - Altoona Curve RHP Gerrit Cole has been selected to represent the Pirates organization and play for the U.S. squad in the 2012 SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game that will take place July 8 as part of the All-Star festivities at Kauffman Stadium, Major League Baseball announced earlier today. Cole will make the trip with fellow hard-throwing right hander Jameson Taillon as well as 2010 Curve pitching coach and current Indianapolis Indians pitching coach Tom Filer. It is the fourth straight season a member of the Curve will partake in the Futures game and with Cole's selection the Curve have had at least one player selected in all but three seasons since becoming a franchise in 1999.

The first-overall pick in the 2011 draft out of UCLA took the hill last night for the Curve in his Double-A debut and earned the victory. The Newport Beach, Calif. native set down the first nine men he faced in order and wound up finishing five innings with two runs allowed and six strikeouts. His outing came on the heels of a promotion from High-A Bradenton where he was 5-1 with a 2.55 ERA and among the league leaders in ERA (2.55, 4th), WHIP (1.10, 3rd), batting average against (.217, 4th), batting average against for a starter (.217, 3rd), most strikeouts per 9 IP for a starter (9.27, 3rd) and fewest baserunners per 9 IP for a starter (10.34, 4th).

Cole joins the likes of Starling Marte, Gorkys Hernandez and Bryan Morris, who are the three most recent Curve members to be invited to play in the Futures game. This year's game will begin at 5 p.m. ET on July 8 and will be televised live on ESPN2, ESPN2 HD and MLB.com. The game, as in years past, comes as part of Taco Bell All-Star Sunday, which is the first of three days of events surrounding the midsummer classic.

The 21-year-old will be under the direction of George Brett during the Futures game as the Hall of Famer, who spent his entire 21-year career with the Royals, is slated to manage the U.S. squad for the game. The World squad will be managed by five-time American League All-Star Bernie Williams.
