Five-Run Ninth Sends River Cats Over Cubs, 9-1

DES MOINES, Iowa - Daric Barton hit his seventh home run of the season and the River Cats exploded in the ninth inning to propel them to a 9-1 win over the Iowa Cubs in the final game of the series at Principal Park.

Sacramento took the first lead of the game in the top of the second inning off a Hiro Nakijima double that plated Anthony Aliotti. Michael Choice increased the River Cats lead with a single that scored Barton.

Barton extended the lead to 4-1 in the fifth with his seventh home run of the year and the first of the series for the River Cats. Sacramento sealed the win in the ninth with an explosion from the offense that included an Andy Parrino double, a Barton sacrifice fly, a Shane Peterson single, and a Choice double, allowing the River Cats to run away with the series finale.

Four River Cats players had multi-hit games and two hit multiple RBI as Barton finished 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored, while Peterson recorded his 22nd multi-hit game and finished 3-for-5 with one RBI. Choice knocked in three RBI and finished 2-for-5, and Nakajima finished 2-for-4 with an RBI.

River Cats pitcher Bruce Billings struck out five and walked only one as he gave up four hits and Iowa's lone run over six innings. Billings earned his league-leading 13th win of the season and improved to 13-5 on the season. Relievers Fernando Nieve and Hideki Okajima combined for three strikeouts over two scoreless innings, and Chris Resop tossed one scoreless inning to seal the River Cats win.

Brooks Raley was tagged with the loss for the Cubs as he allowed four runs on seven hits and struck out seven over his six-inning appearance. Lefty Jeffry Antigua gave up five runs on five hits - all in the ninth - as the I-Cubs saw their record fall to 58-67 on the season.

Sacramento collected 12 hits and walked twice as they improved their record to 69-57, splitting the four-game series with Iowa.

The River Cats will send Travis Banwart (8-5, 4.64 ERA) to the mound to face right-handed pitcher Anthony Bass (3-5, 5.97 ERA) as they start a five-game set against the Tucson Padres in a homestand that will feature two fireworks shows, Kids Night Out, and a Mario Encarnacion bobblehead giveaway.
