COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Colorado Springs Sky Sox swept the Memphis Redbirds in a doubleheader on Thursday at Security Service Field, winning 7-3 in the opener and 7-1 in the twinbill nightcap.

It was the third time in Redbirds franchise history that a four-game series was decided by two doubleheaders. The Redbirds scored eight runs for a win in the opening game, then plated just five runs over the next three losses to Colorado Springs.

Memphis (60-66) is now two games behind division-leading Omaha in the PCL American Northern Division and moves to 9-5 in doubleheader action. The Redbirds were swept during a doubleheader for the first time since dropping two to Round Rock on July 29, 2012 at AutoZone Park.

Memphis outhit the Sky Sox in the twinbill opener by an 11-9 margin, but lost 7-3. All eight positional players had at least one hit, including two from Mike O'Neill, Ryan Jackson, and Greg Garcia in a losing effort.

Chris Volstad (7-4) scattered all 11 Memphis hits for three runs over six innings for the win. Former Redbird Mitchell Boggs worked a scoreless seventh to end the game.

The Redbirds went ahead at 1-0 top of the third inning as Ryan Jackson led off with a single down the right field line. Jackson moved to second on a Brock Peterson groundout, and scored as Jamie Romak hammered an RIB single up the middle.

Nick Additon retired nine of the first 10 batters of the game before getting into trouble and allowing two runs in the fourth inning. After Jordan Pacheco worked an inning-opening walk, Ryan Wheeler and Xavier Nady followed with RBI base hits.

The Sky Sox tacked on four more runs in the next frame for a 6-1 advantage. Drew Garcia walked and scored on a Pacheco RBI single to left. Jorge Rondon then entered in relief of Additon with the bases load and allowed a sacrifice fly and two RBI singles.

Memphis cut the lead in half at 6-3 in the sixth inning after loading the bases with no outs. Catcher Travis Tartamella hit a two-run single to center for the first two runs. The club failed to do further damage with the bases loaded as Jackson grounded into an inning-ending double play.

Colorado Springs added an insurance run in the seventh frame as pinch hitter Hernan Iribarren singled and later came around to score on a wild pitch.

Additon (8-7) was charged with six runs on five hits in 4 1/3 innings, striking out and walking four in the loss. Rondon allowed all three inherited runners to score, yielding one run in 1 2/3 frames.

Three home runs, including a grand slam, powered Colorado Springs to a 7-1 win over Memphis in the doubleheader nightcap.

Sky Sox starter Nick Schmidt hurled four no-hit frames for a no-decision. Rob Scahill struck out five over the final two frames to move to 5-1.

The Sky Sox took a 3-0 lead in the nightcap thanks to a couple of home runs. Tim Wheeler sent a two-out, solo shot over the center field wall in the third before Kent Matthes crushed a two-run bomb in the fourth inning. It was Wheeler's fourth and Matthes' sixth.

Memphis was hitless through the first four frames before Greg Garcia and Audry Perez opened with singles off Colorado Rockies rehabber Rafael Betancourt. Later in the inning, pinch hitter Chad Huffman brought home the Redbirds' only run with a fielder's choice RBI, beating out a double play attempt.

The Sky Sox blew it open in the next inning with Ryan Wheeler's grand slam. Reliever Deryk Hooker recorded the first outs before the next four consecutive batters reached, culminating in Wheeler's bases-loaded blast.

Scott McGregor (4-8) dropped his fourth consecutive losing decision, giving up three runs on three hits in four innings. Michael Blazek struck out one in one inning.

The Redbirds return to the Bluff City for their final homestand of the regular season on Friday for a crucial five-game series against the division-leading Omaha Storm Chasers (Triple-A Royals). The division-rivals will both throw left-handers in the series opener, as Tyler Lyons (7-2, 3.39) faces PCL All-Star Chris Dwyer (8-10, 3.60).
