Tacoma Rainiers News Release
ROUND ROCK, Texas - The Tacoma Rainiers let a late lead slip away in a 5-3 loss to the Round Rock Express at Dell Diamond on Thursday night. The loss sealed a series split for Tacoma in the team's series finale against the Express.
The Rainiers held a 3-1 advantage before surrendering an insurmountable four runs on three hits in the bottom of the sixth inning. Joey Butler and Alex Buchholz hit RBI singles to even the score at 3-3 before Butler scored the go-ahead run on a Jonathan Arias balk. Aaron Cunningham added another run with a two-out single that scored Buchholz.
Tacoma erased the Express' early 1-0 lead thanks to Rich Poythress' two-out RBI double in the top of the fourth. One batter later, Nate Tenbrink added a go-ahead run with a single that plated Poythress.
A missed catch error with two outs in the top of the sixth inning cleared the way for Franklin Gutierrez to score and stretch the Rainiers lead to two runs prior to Round Rock's rally in the sixth.
Taijuan Walker (3-3) was dealt the loss after surrendering five runs on four hits over 5.2 innings. The right-hander struck out nine and walked four in his ninth start with the Rainiers this season.
The Rainiers (66-60) return to Cheney Stadium to open a five-game homestand against the Colorado Springs Sky Sox tomorrow, August 16. Right-hander Blake Beavan (4-5, 5.33) is slated to start for Tacoma against Sky Sox right-hander Armando Galarraga (0-2, 7.24). First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
