Willmar Stingers News Release

WILLMAR, Minn. - The resurgent kings of sting put on a show for the nearly 1000 fans in attendance at Bill Taunton Stadium, launching a season-high five home runs and Abe Bobb, bolstered by a hyper-productive offense, registered his 5th win of the season in five starts to propel the Stingers to a series split with the Duluth Huskies. The 11-2 victory came just one night after the Stingers laid an egg and demonstrated the resolve of Manager Matt Hollod's team.

"They responded," said Hollod. "You can't worry about what happened last night."

Wasting no time to begin its assault, the Stingers offense scored a pair of runs in the 1st inning. Marc Flores and Michael Suchy each walked with two outs and scored on base hits by Max Kuhn and Nick Halamandaris respectively. Allowing runs with two outs proved costly for Duluth as the first five runs of the game all came with the Stingers down to their final out during the first two frames. In the 2nd, Marc Flores (Hawaii) scored another pair of runners that had reached via base on balls with a three-run blast to right field. The home run was Flores' team leading eighth of the season and came with two outs on the board.

The Huskies managed to cut into the Willmar lead with a pair of unearned runs in the top of the 4th inning, but the Stingers made up the difference in the bottom half following Zack Tillery's two-run shot. After that, the Huskies were denied despite having several scoring chances and the Stingers continued hitting bombs.

Michael Suchy (Florida Gulf Coast) hit a pair against Duluth reliever AJ McElderry to bring his season total to seven. Suchy finished the game 2-of-3 as he also drew a pair of walks and scored three runs, thus, assuming the mantle of CDI player of the game on a night when several Stingers played well enough to earn consideration. Max Dutto (Cal-Berkley) was the last Stinger to homer, launching his first of the season with nobody on base in the 7th inning.

The game, however, remains at least slightly bittersweet for Stinger Nation as it was the final game in a Willmar uniform for Abe Bobb. Bobb (San Francisco) will begin rehabbing a few nagging injuries as he gears up for his senior campaign with the Dons. The beguiling righty went out the same as he came in - with a win over Duluth. Bobb notched his third win over the Huskies over seven innings, yielding seven hits and a pair of unearned runs. Bobb lowered his league-best ERA to 1.13.

The offensive awakening coincides with the arrival of the Waterloo Bucks for a two-game series. The Bucks, winners of the NWL North Division in the first half of the season, have started the second half with a perfect mark of 6-0. The Stingers will turn to Colin Poche (Arkansas) to deal the Bucks their first loss In July. Poche (2-1) boasts a 1.58 ERA and will be making his third start of the season.
