
MoonDogs Use Bats to Defeat Honkers

(Rochester, MN) - The Mankato MoonDogs hit four homeruns in an 18-5 win over the Rochester Honkers on Tuesday July 9 at Mayo Field.
Due to the heavy rain in the morning and the field conditions, the start time of the game was delayed two hours.
Kalei Hanawahine (Hawaii) led off the bottom of the first inning with a double and came around to score on a sacrifice fly from Max Murphy (Bradley) to give the Honkers the early lead. Jeff Campbell (North Dakota) drew a walk to start the second inning and Tyler Baker (Wichita State) followed with a single to put a pair of runners on base. Campbell scored when Matt Halloran (Minnesota) grounded into a double play to give Rochester a 2-0 lead after two inning.
The MoonDogs answered with a five-run top of the third inning as they blasted three homeruns. Matt Jones and John Michael Twichell hit solo homeruns, while Josh Fuentes hit a two-run homerun to give the MoonDogs a 5-2 lead. Twichell belted his second homerun of the game in the following inning to increase the lead to 8-2 after three and a half innings. Twichell hit a pair of homeruns in each of the two games in the series.
Timothy Arakawa drove a bases clearing double in the top of the fifth inning to give Mankato a nine-run lead. Rochester answered with three runs of its own in the bottom half of the inning as Baker and Halloran started the inning with back-to-back singles and Kevin Barker (UC Davis) followed with a RBI double. Reid Roper (Illinois) and Hanawahine picked up RBI in the inning to cut the deficit to six runs at 11-5 after five innings.
The MoonDogs added two runs in the seventh inning and five more in the eighth inning to build the 13-run lead.
Brock Dykxhoorn earned the win (2-3) for Mankato, as he allowed five runs on eight hits in seven innings of work. Mason Pingel (Western Illinois) took the loss (2-3) for Rochester. He allowed eight runs on ten hits in four innings, while striking out four batters. Brian Schwarzbach (Pennsylvania) pitched a scoreless ninth inning in relief for the Honkers.
Hanawahine led the Honkers offense by going 3-for-5 with a run scored and a RBI. Baker added a pair of hits in the game.
Rochester (0-6, 18-23) will travel to Duluth for a two-game series that begins on Wednesday July 10 at 6:35 p.m. Brandon Stennis (Doane College) is scheduled to make the start for the Honkers. Parker Trewin (North Dakota State) is slated to start for the Huskies. The Honkers will return home on Friday July 12 at 7:05 p.m. to host the Willmar Stingers. Friday is jersey giveaway night, presented by Wells Fargo, so the first 500 fans in attendance will receive a free jersey.
