Willmar Stingers News Release
WILLMAR, Minn. - The Duluth Huskies came into Bill Taunton Stadium with a hot start to the season's second half and left looking like legitimate contenders in the NWL North Division. The Stingers may have suffered a hangover from their lengthy travels north of the border and were unable to get much of anything going offensively against Chris Cervantes and the Duluth bullpen. Cervantes, making his first start of the season, pitched six strong innings, allowing just one run en route to the Huskies' 10-1 victory. The Stingers offense, ranked highest in the NWL in OPS (On-base Plus Slugging), managed to get runners on base by drawing six walks, but had rallies stifled throughout the game.
Cervantes and the Huskies exacted a measure of revenge against Michael Murray (Florida Gulf Coast) who had previously made two excellent starts in Duluth. Murray was chased from the game in the third inning and Cervantes never let up. Though Cervantes walked several Stingers, he allowed just two hits during his time on the mound.
The CDI player of the game honors go to Joe Kirkland. Kirkland (Baylor) came into the game in the 7th inning with tenacity, throwing strikes and relying on his defense to help retire batters. The righty pitched his first game since June 20th and, despite giving up a pair of infield singles, got the better of most Huskies he faced. Kirkland recorded two strikeouts and dropped his season ERA to 3.68. Kirkland's college teammate, Bobby McCormack, also pitched solidly in relief. McCormack (Baylor) recorded the final three outs, striking out a pair.
Kyle Perry singled to score Colton Bottomley (Florida Gulf Coast) in the 3rd inning, accounting for the Stingers' sole run. Perry's (Monmouth) RBI was his tenth of the season and came on a solid base hit through the middle of the infield.
The Stingers still hold the season series edge over Duluth, winning 4-of-7 and also have the better overall record, leading the Huskies by 1.5 games. The Stingers entered the game with a 13-5 home record.
The Stingers will take aim at the Huskies tomorrow night in the final game of the series. Willmar will turn to the beguiling Abe Bobb (San Francisco) to try and split the series. On the season, Bobb has won all four of his starts and boasts a 1.38 ERA, the lowest in the NWL.
Tomorrow Night is "Bird Zerk" Night presented by Hansen Advertising.
