Five Bisons Named to IL All-Star Team
June 22, 2005 - International League (IL1)
Buffalo Bisons News Release
The International League announced today that five members of the Buffalo Bisons have been named to their 2005 All-Star Team. Outfielder Ernie Young, infielder Jake Gautreau and catcher Ryan Garko were selected as starters for the IL while reliever Fernando Cabrera and infielder Brandon Phillips were named as reserves. Bisons' manager Marty Brown was named the skipper of the IL All-Star Team on May 25.
Five players are the most All-Stars the Bisons have ever had in one season. The 18th annual Triple-A All-Star Game will be held on July 13 at Raley Field in Sacramento, California. All-Stars from the International League will face the best players of the Triple-A Pacific Coast League. The game will be broadcasted on television on ESPN 2 at 10:00 p.m. EST and on the radio on WECK AM 1230 and WSPQ AM 1330.
Ernie Young will be making his second consecutive start for the Bisons in the All-Star Game. Young, 35, currently leads the league with 56RBI, is tied for the IL-lead with 17 home runs and is tied for 2nd with 50 runs scored. The slugger has also hit .311 (68-219) with a .571 slugging percentage and a .408 on-base percentage. Young, who homered twice on April 8 against Richmond (game one) and May 22 against Charlotte, drove in his 1,000th Minor League run June 16 in Indianapolis.
Jake Gautreau, 25, will start at second base after a tremendous first half with the Bisons. Acquired in an off-season trade from San Diego, Gautreau leads the International League with 52 runs scored and is 4th with 34 extra-base hits. He also leads Buffalo with 19 doubles (T-5th in IL) and is 2nd with 14 home runs to go along with a .291 (72-247) average and 38RBI. Gautreau hit two home runs on June 16 against Indianapolis, and tied a Bisons' Modern Era Record with five hits on June 5 against Columbus.
Ryan Garko, 24, has been solid behind the plate and at first base in his first season at Triple-A. He has hit .268 (64-239) with 13 home runs and 41RBI. Garko hit two home runs on June 1 against Toledo, homered on consecutive days, June 9-10, and launched a Grand Slam on June 12 in Louisville.
Fernando Cabrera, 23, has almost been unhittable out of the bullpen for the Bisons. In 23 games, he has posted a 6-0 record with a team-leading 0.92ERA and three saves. Cabrera is also second on the team with 55 strikeouts in just 39.1 innings pitched. He has allowed just four runs and seven walks while holding opposing batters to a .186 batting average. From May 5-June 13, Cabrera pitched 14 scoreless outings, covering 25.1 innings pitched (12H, 5BB, 34K).
Brandon Phillips, 23, is currently tied for 2nd (with Young) in the International League with 50 runs scored. Batting exclusively out of the leadoff spot for Buffalo, Phillips has hit .259 (73-282) with 14 doubles, 10 home runs and 28RBI. He's homered to lead off a game three times this season, and hit a pair of home runs on June 10 against Syracuse. Phillips has also been spectacular at shortstop for the Bisons.
