Lynx closer Tim Byrdak and 2B Bernie Castro to represent Ottawa in Sacramento

OTTAWA - The International League announced today that Ottawa Lynx LHP TIM BYRDAK and 2B BERNIE CASTRO were selected to the International League All-Star Team. The duo will be part of the International League All-Stars as they take on the Pacific Coast League All-Stars in the annual Triple-A mid-summer classic which will be held in Sacramento, CA on July 13th.

Byrdak, 31, has excelled as the Lynx closer out of the bullpen this year, posting a 3-2 record a 2.45 ERA. He leads the Lynx with 10 saves and 32 appearances. The lefthander has struck out 38 batters in 33.0 innings while giving up only 23 hits and holding opponents to a paltry .193 batting average. Byrdak is in his 12th season of professional baseball. He started his career with the Kansas City Royals organization, where he made 48 appearances for the Royals between 1998-2000. He spent time in the Cleveland Indians and San Diego Padres organizations before being traded to the Baltimore Orioles organization for future considerations on June 22nd, 2004.

Castro, 25, has been the sparkplug to the Lynx offense all season long. The Lynx leadoff hitter and second baseman, Castro is fifth in the IL in both batting average (.328) and hits (81). The speedy second baseman leads Ottawa in batting average (.328), hits (81), runs (45), triples (4), walks (21) and stolen bases (14). Castro started his career with the Yankees organization in 1998 before being traded to San Diego in 2001. The switch-hitter signed a Minor League contract with the Orioles organization prior to this season.

The selection of two Ottawa players to the All-Star team marks the first time since 1996 when Yamil Benitez and Chris Martin were selected that the Lynx will have two representatives attending the All-Star game.

The 18th annual Triple-A All-Star game pits the best players of the International League against their All-Star counterparts from the Pacific Coast League. The two teams were selected by club field personnel, media representatives, and league administrators. This will mark the eighth consecutive season that teams representing the International League and the Pacific Coast League have met.
