Tiffee leads Rochester to 6-1 win over Indianapolis
June 22, 2005 - International League (IL1)
Indianapolis Indians News Release
INDIANAPOLIS -- Third baseman Terry Tiffee blasted a solo homer in the second inning and a grand slam in the sixth, while left-hander Dave Gassner allowed just one earned run over 8.1 innings as Rochester posted a 6-1 victory over Indianapolis Wednesday afternoon at Victory Field.
The Red Wings improve to 37-36 with the win. The Indians fall to 44-28 on the season, but stay atop the International League's West Division.
Rochester cracked the scoreboard in the top of the second when Tiffee blasted his fifth roundtripper of the campaign -- a solo shot to right field.
Indianapolis answered in the bottom of the second with its only run of the contest. DH Ronny Paulino beat out a swinging bunt to extend his hitting streak to 14 games. He then moved to third on CF Nate McLouth's double to right field and came plateward when DH Jose Leon lifted a sacrifice fly to left.
The Red Wings pushed across another run in the third. Catcher Chris Heintz led off with a double to left field and came around to score when 2B Luis Maza roped a double to right.
Tiffee's sixth homer of the season -- a grand slam to right field -- gave Rochester all the insurance runs it would need in the top of the sixth. The dinger scored CF Jason Tyner, Maza and SS Jason Bartlett.
Tribe RHP Ian Snell (6.0 IP, 7 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 0 BB, 4 SO), who started the season 9-0, was pinned with his second straight loss. RHP Hansel Izquierdo (2.0 IP, 1 H, 1 BB) worked the seventh and eighth in his Triple-A debut, while RHP Brian Mallette (1.0 IP, 1 BB) threw an inning of relief in the ninth.
Gassner (8.1 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 3 SO) earned the victory, improving to 5-5 on the season. RHP Beau Kemp (0.2 IP, 1 SO) finished the game as the Red Wings took a 2-1 lead in the four-game series.
Indians LF Cesar Crespo continued his hot streak, going 2-for-4 on the afternoon.
Indianapolis will wrap up an eight-game homestand Thursday night at 7 p.m. when Rochester returns for the series finale. The contest will be carried by ESPN-950 AM as Howard Kellman and Robert Portnoy have the call. Thursday's pre-game show begins at 6:40 p.m.
