TODAY'S GAME: The third of a four game series and the seventh of eight meetings, the second of four at Alliance Bank Stadium. The Braves are 1-5 versus the SkyChiefs this season, 1-1 at Syracuse. The Braves were 5-3 vs. Syracuse last year, 2-2 at Alliance Bank Stadium. Game eight of a nine game road trip. Richmond is 3-4 on the trip. Richmond is in a stretch of 36 straight games vs. North Division clubs that runs through June 27. The Braves are 12-26 vs. the North, 7-16 on the road. Richmond is third in the South, 14 games out of first. The SkyChiefs are tied for third in the North, eight games out of first. The Braves are 334-302 all-time vs. the SkyChiefs.
LAST NIGHT'S GAME: The SkyChiefs beat the Braves 5-4 at Alliance Bank Stadium Tuesday. The Braves stretched their shutout streak to 23 innings before the Chiefs erupted for four runs in the sixth inning to deny the Braves a third straight win. Richmond grabbed a 1-0 lead on a James Jurries home run in the fourth. Carlos Mendez singled two home in the fifth to make it 3-0. The Braves took a 4-0 lead on a Jason Bourgeois homer in the sixth. The SkyChiefs sent eight men up in their sixth inning rally to tie the game. Kevin Barker singled a run home. John-Ford Griffin chased two home with a double, and Jason Alfaro tied the game with an RBI double. The Chiefs scored the winning run in the seventh on an RBI single by Bryant Nelson. Jurries, Bourgeois, and Bill McCarthy had two hits each for the Braves. Alfaro and ex-R-Brave Joe DiPastino had two hits for the Chiefs. Brandon League picked up the win. Matt Whiteside earned a save. Chad Paronto, making his Richmond debut, took the loss.
THE ROSTER: Richmond has added OF Kerry Robinson to the roster (signed as free agent, was released by San Diego). To make room for Robinson, the Braves released 1B Andy Barkett. The Braves added RHP Chad Paronto to the roster yesterday (signed as free agent, was released by Milwaukee). To make room for Paronto the Braves sent RHP Jeremy Ward to Mississippi. Esix Snead has served eight games of a 10 game suspension handed out by the International League for his role in last Monday night's brawl. His roster spot cannot be replaced so the active roster stands at 23 (12 pitchers, two catchers, five infielders, and four outfielders with two players on the DL and one suspended). The Braves have made 68 roster moves this season and lost 172 man-games to the disabled list. Eight Braves have earned big league call-ups this season and four are currently with Atlanta (Andy Marte, Kyle Davies, Kelly Johnson, and John Foster). The other four big league call-ups were Frank Brooks, Matt Childers, Seth Greisinger, and Brayan Pena. Five current Braves have seen action in the big leagues this season.
NUMBERS OF NOTE: Richmond is last in the IL in batting average, runs scored, and walks issued. Esix Snead leads the league in stolen bases with 25. Seth Greisinger is fifth in the league in ERA and tied for second in innings pitched. John Barnes is 17-48 (.354) since returning from Double-A. He has hit in six straight games. Carlos Mendez has hits in six straight games (6-24 .250). Jason Bourgeois, James Jurries, Tony Pena, and Scott Pratt have hits in three straight games. Eight Braves have been placed on the DL this season. Jason Childers has worked three straight scoreless outings with two saves since returning from the DL. Over the last six games Braves starting pitchers have allowed five runs in 31.1 innings (1.44 ERA).
BRAVES ALL STARS: The Braves will have three representatives on the International League squad for the Triple-A All Star Game. C Brayan Pena and RHP Seth Gresinger will play for the IL. Manager Pat Kelly is on the IL coaching staff.
