Laforest Joins Lynx Pitchers In Philly

OTTAWA - The Philadelphia Phillies claimed catcher and Gatineau native Pierre-Luc Laforest off waivers from the San Diego Padres. RHP John Ennis and RHP Geoff Geary will also join the Phillies after being called up from the Lynx.

Laforest, 29, appeared in 10 games for San Diego and hit .360 (9-25) with one home run and three RBI. In 86 games for triple-A Portland this season, Laforest hit .230 with 29 home runs and 72 RBI. He finished seventh among all triple-A players in home runs and had four 5-RBI games. Originally selected by Montreal in the 16th round of the 1995 draft, Laforest has appeared in 54 major league games for Tampa Bay (2003 and 2005) and San Diego (2007) and has a career average of .204 (28-137) with two home runs and 13 RBI.

Ennis, 27, was 4-4 with a 3.38 ERA in 37 games with the Lynx, including seven starts. Ennis was tied for second on the Lynx in games pitched and was all alone in second place for strikeouts and third in innings pitched. Ennis made one appearance with Philadelphia earlier this season, allowing one run over three innings in his first game the Major Leagues since 2004 when he appeared in 12 games with the Detroit Tigers.

Geary, 30, was 2-1 with a 2.54 ERA in 14 games with the Lynx. He struck out 21 batters in 25 innings. Geary has accumulated a 1-2 record with a 5.01 ERA in 44 games with the Phillies this season. Last year, he reached career highs in wins (7), innings (91.1), games (81) and strikeouts (60). Geary finished tied for second among National League relievers in innings, third in winning percentage, tied for fourth in wins and tied for sixth in games played. This is his 10th professional season.
