
First NHL-Drafted Australian Nathan Walker and Forward Caleb Herbert Assigned to Stingrays

North Charleston, S.C. - The South Carolina Stingrays, celebrating 22 seasons of hockey in the Lowcountry, announced today that forwards Nathan Walker and Caleb Herbert have been assigned to the team from the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League (AHL) by the Washington Capitals of the National Hockey League (NHL).
Walker, 20, became the first Australian player drafted by an NHL team when the Capitals selected the Sydney native in the third round (89th overall) in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft. The 5-foot-10, 185-pound forward skated in 23 games with the Bears this season picking up one goal and three assists for four points and dressed in 43 games with the Bears last season, netting 11 points (five goals, six assists). Prior to turning pro, Walker battled in a half a season of North American junior hockey with the Youngstown Phantoms of the United States Hockey League (USHL) and over four seasons in the Czech Republic.
Herbert, 23, scored four goals and an assist for five points in six games with the Stingrays this season including his first professional hat trick on November 1 against the Greenville Road Warriors. The Bloomington, Minnesota, native appeared in 12 games with the Bears this season picking up two assists. Skating in his first full professional season, Herbert completed a three-year collegiate career at the University of Minnesota - Duluth totaling 89 points (32 goals, 57 assists) in 112 contests. Following his senior season, he appeared in seven games with the Bears and scored a goal and an assist in his first professional game. He was selected by the Capitals in the fifth round (142nd overall) in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft.
