Flint Firebirds News Release
Flint, Mich. - Flint's Ryan Moore recorded a two-point night and Cullen Mercer scored the game-winning goal en route to a 3-2 victory over the #4 ranked Kitchener Rangers (http://flintfirebirds.com/article/kitchener01122016) in front of nearly 7,000 fans on Friday night.
Will Bitten started the scoring off 3:06 into the game after picking up a rebound shot from Alex Di Carlo and backhanding the puck into the net for the early lead. Ryan Moore earned the second assist on the Firebirds go-ahead goal. The Firebirds lead in both scoring and shots after the first period of play.
The Rangers would score their first goal of the contest six minutes into the middle frame when the puck unintentionally caromed off Jeremy Bracco's skate and into the Firebirds net.
Ryan Moore would earn the lead back 2:37 later on the power play. Vili Saarijarvi dished the puck to Mathieu Henderson at the right point. Henderson then found Ryan Moore at the bottom of the right circle, scoring on a small opening short side to give the Firebirds the lead heading into intermission for the second time of the evening.
Flint would increase their lead to two goals with one minute remaining in the game when Cullen Mercer scored from nearly 200 feet away on an empty net shot in the Firebirds left corner. The Rangers would tally a power play goal with 33 seconds left but the Firebirds skated away with the 3-2 victory and two points in the conference standings.
Brent Moran made 33 saves on 35 Kitchener shots Friday night. The Firebirds were 1-for-5 on the power play while the Rangers were 1-for-3.
Earlier this season, the Flint Firebirds also bested the Erie Otters 6-5 on Nov. 22 who were ranked #1 in the CHL at the time.
