Guelph Storm News Release

Well, that escalated quickly.

The Sarnia Sting used a five-goal outburst in the second period to take down the Guelph Storm 6-2 Friday night at the Sleeman Centre.

The Sting (30-15-5-2) have now outscored the Storm (11-34-4-2) 13-2 in two games so far this season.

Luke Burghardt and Isaac Ratcliffe had the goals for Guelph, who have now dropped two straight games.

In the early going, the Storm did a solid job of taking away the Sarnia offence's passing lanes and limiting quality scoring chances as the visitors dominated the first 20 minutes.

Outscoring Guelph 11-2, the Sting took a 1-0 lead 8:37 into the contest. Nikita Korostelev netted his first of two goals on the evening when he collected the puck after his initial shot was blocked, spun around and scored from the slot as the puck slid along the ice past Michael Giugovaz.

Much unlike the first, the second period was every Storm fan's nightmare as goals from the oppposition came early and often.

1:41 into the middle frame, Korostelev potted his second of the game to give Sarnia a 2-0 lead. Travis Konecny executed a fancy zone entry by deking past a Storm defenceman before firing a pass to Korostelev who one-timed the puck bar-down over Giugovaz's glove.

Just 39 seconds later, another one came.

Jordan Kyrou gave the Sting a 3-0 advantage when he found the puck in front of the Guelph net and backhanded the puck off the glove of Giugovaz and into the net.

It didn't stop there, either.

Konecny received a stretch pass in the neutral zone from Troy Lajeunesse and broke into the Storm zone down the right wing when he fired a wrist shot that beat Giugovaz low under his glove as Sarnia took a 4-0 lead.

After an initial pad save by Giugovaz, Patrick White found the rebound and put the puck across the line over Giugovaz's glove as fans at the Sleeman Centre saw the home team go down 5-0.

Then, with four seconds left in the period, Konecny launched a shot that hit Storm rookie Liam Stevens in the face and deflected into the net as the Sting took a 6-0 lead into the second intermission.

In the third period, Bradley Van Schubert replaced Giugovaz in net to begin the final frame.

Burghardt would finally get Guelph on the board thanks to a fantastic individual effort. The second year forward collected the puck at centre ice, split a pair of Sarnia defenders and chipped the puck over the glove of goaltender Justin Fazio into the right side of the net.

The Storm would add another tally when rookie Ratcliffe banged home a loose puck with traffic in the Sting crease to make it 6-2.

6-2 was as close as Guelph would get, though, as Sarnia's five-goal second period proved to be too much to recover from.

For Guelph, Giugovaz finished with 25 saves while Van Schubert stopped all seven shots he faced and Sarnia's Fazio turned aside 35.

Final shots were 38-37 for Sarnia.

The Storm are back in action tomorrow night when they head to Barrie for a battle with the Colts. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
