South Carolina Stingrays News Release
North Charleston, SC -The South Carolina Stingrays hosted their Fifth Annual Pink in the Rink Night presented by East Cooper Medicial Center benefiting Susan G. Komen Lowcountry on Saturday, January 22 and raised over $46,000 to help fight breast cancer, the largest amount in team history. The Stingrays defeated the Greenville Road Warriors 5-1 in front of a Pink in the Rink-record crowd of 8,364 at the North Charleston Coliseum while skating on pink ice, wearing pink jerseys and playing with pink sticks.
"This is a great partnership that has gone beyond Pink in the Rink," said Susan G. Komen Lowcountry Executive Director Taffy Tamblyn. "We are reaching a different audience and touching the lives of more women and making them aware of breast cancer. Through these donations, there are a lot of women who could not afford a mammogram who will now be getting one. When we go home at the end of the day thinking 'We touched someone's life today' that is a powerful feeling and the Stingrays helped accomplish that."
The pink jerseys were auctioned off live at the end of the game and the sticks joined the silent auction on the Coliseum main concourse. Other items that raised money for the cause were group and individual ticket sales, exclusive 2011 Pink Packs, vendor tables, raffles and special events. In the five-year history of the event, the Stingrays have donated over $119,000. It was recently announced by Susan G. Komen Lowcountry that Stingrays President Rob Conncannon has accepted to be the honorary chairman for the 2011 Komen Lowcountry Race for the Cure.
"We are thrilled to have had the opportunity for the second consecutive year to partner with Komen and the Stingrays for this wildly successful event," said East Cooper Medical Center CEO Janie Sinacore Jaberg. "Not only does Pink in the Rink offer a great evening out for entire families, but it raises much needed dollars for an extremely worthy cause. At East Cooper Medical Center, we see women every day who are affected by breast cancer, and our greatest hope is that our participation in events like Pink in the Rink will help prevent the disease from impacting one more life."
"The response from our community for this event is remarkable and gets bigger every year," said Concannon. "Walking through the Coliseum on the night of the game and seeing the players in their pink jerseys and everyone smiling and having a great time is unbelievable. It does not matter if you are an avid hockey fan or not. The love and support is contagious. Seeing everyone having a great time for a great cause gives you goose bumps. We cannot wait for next year."
