Asheville Tourists News Release

ASHEVILLE, NC-- It is hard to imagine a better start to a game than how the Asheville Tourists began Thursday night's contest against the Savannah Sand Gnats. The Tourists pounded out five runs in the bottom of the first inning to jump ahead, but Savannah stayed the course and plated the game's final 11 runs to defeat Asheville 11-5.

During the breakout inning, Shane Hoelscher plated a pair with a double off the right field wall. A single by Roberto Ramos scored Hoelscher and Ramos later came home on a Cesar Galvez RBI single. The Tourists added one more in the frame and held a 5-0 lead after one.

The Sand Gnats cut into the lead with three runs in the second. Jonathan Johnson doubled in Tomas Nido and John Mora followed with a two-run single. The score remained 5-3 as Asheville's Ryan Castellani and Savannah's Chris Flexen both settled into a rhythm.

In the top of the sixth the Tourists went to their bullpen and the Sand Gnats took advantage. Johnson delivered again; this time with a three-run Home Run to put the Sand Gnats in front 6-5. Savannah tacked on an unearned run in the seventh but broke it open in the eighth.

With the bases loaded and two outs, Vicente Lupo tripled to deep centerfield. The three-bagger cleared the bases and put Savannah in front 10-5. They would add another in the ninth. Asheville recorded only three hits outside of the first inning. Savannah's Tyler Moore became the first opposing player to record a five-hit game against Asheville this season. Moore entered play with a .157 batting average.

The Tourists will have an opportunity to earn a series split with Friday's finale scheduled for 7:05pm.
