Greenville Drive News Release
Greenville, SC - The Greenville Drive defended their home turf with authority on Thursday night at Fluor Field, with 12 hits from the offense and strong pitching combining to defeat the Greensboro Grasshoppers 10-2.
A three-run bottom of the third gave the Drive (28-31, 66-63) everything they would need. Bryan Hudson and Yoan Moncada pulled off a double steal of home and second with one out to put the Drive on the board. Michael Chavis followed with an RBI triple to left-center off Greensboro (19-40, 48-80) starter Enderson Franco (1-4) to make the score 2-0, and he later came home on a wild pitch.
Dedgar Jimenez (8-9) received the win for the Drive after allowing only one run on six hits and one walk in six innings with six strikeouts.
RBI singles in the fifth by Andrew Benintendi and Nick Longhi plated two more runs to make the score 5-0.
K.J. Woods put the Grasshoppers on the board in the sixth with an RBI single off Jimenez, and Austen Smith cracked a solo homer in the seventh for their second run.
The Drive played long ball in the bottom half of the seventh to pull away. Moncada began the frame with a single and came in on Longhi's two-run shot to left, his seventh homer of the year. After a walk by Javier Guerra and a single by Danny Mars, J.T. Watkins lifted a three-run homer down the line in left for his first round-tripper of the season.
Longhi went 2-4 with three RBI for Greenville, while Watkins added three RBI as well. Moncada added a pair of hits, three runs and three stolen bases, and David Sopilka chipped in with two hits.
The series finale between the two teams begins at 7:05 PM on Friday night at Fluor Field. LH Jalen Beeks (9-5, 4.04) starts on the mound for the Drive, and RH Tyler Kolek (4-10, 4.44) takes the bump for the Grasshoppers.
