Charleston RiverDogs News Release
HICKORY, N.C. - Joey Falcone drove in a pair and Radley Haddad had five RBI to pace the Charleston RiverDogs past the Hickory Crawdads 10-7 Thursday night at L.P. Frans Stadium. The win ties the season series 5-5 with one game remaining.
The RiverDogs entered the eighth trailing 7-5, but rallied back to score five in the frame against Hickory's Collin Wiles and Joe Filomeno. Austin Aune sparked the rally with a one-out infield single. Bo Thompson followed with a walk, which ended Wiles' night on the mound.
Falcone was the first to face the lefty Filomeno. He greeted him with a line drive double over the right fielder's head, which plated Aune and cut the deficit to 7-6. After a Ryan Lindemuth walk loaded the bases, Haddad stepped in and crushed a double that cleared the bases and put the RiverDogs in front for good 10-7.
Garrett Mundell came out of the bullpen and tossed two scoreless innings, locking up his second save with Charleston. In his first professional season, Mundell is now 4-0 with two saves; he has not given up a run in 23.1 innings.
The RiverDogs scored first when Falcone stepped in to face Hickory's Dillon Tate with two out in the top of the second. The newest RiverDog turned a 97 MPH fastball around and crushed it over everything in right field to get Charleston on the board and in front 1-0. It was Falcone's second professional homer.
Charleston's lead was short-lived as the Crawdads scored four, unearned runs in the third against the RiverDogs starter Matt Marsh. Edwin Garcia walked and Jose Trevino reached on an error to the third baseman Lindemuth to spark the rally.
Luke Tendler followed with a towering three-run homer to right and Jairo Beras backed him up with a solo shot that just snuck over the wall in left, making it 4-1.
Lindemuth atoned for his two defensive errors with an RBI single in the fourth, Aune scored cutting the Hickory lead to 4-2. Haddad followed Lindemuth with his first big hit of the night, a two-run single to right that tied the game 4-4.
The volleying continued when the Crawdads took a 5-4 lead on Jose Cardona's solo homer against Marsh in the sixth. Charleston came right back and tied it up with an RBI single off the bat of Angel Aguilar.
The final Hickory runs came in the bottom of the seventh against Sean Carley. Garcia hit an RBI single, which plated Carlos Arroyo and Tendler connected for a sac fly, upping the lead to 7-5.
Marsh pitched six innings and gave up five runs, one earned, on six hits (three homers); he walked a pair and struck out a pair. Carley (3-1) was the beneficiary of the five-run 8th and picked up the win, Mundell with his two scoreless the save.
Tate, the fourth-overall pick in the 2015 draft was solid in his two innings of work. The right gave up his first hit and run in the affair. Wiles went five and one-third before Filomeno (2-2) was charged with the loss.
