Delmarva Shorebirds News Release

SALISBURY, Md. -- The Delmarva Shorebirds won their third straight game against the Kannapolis Intimidators, stealing a 2-1 extra innings victory. Jomar Reyes lifted Delmarva with an RBI double in the 10th inning, climbing over .500 as a team to 64-63.

Back-to-back doubles kickstarted the scoring for Delmarva in the first inning. Steve Wilkerson sliced a double to the left-center gap, and Reyes followed with a ground rule double that bounced off the warning track for a 1-0 lead.

Dennis Torres pitched well in the start for Delmarva, allowing just one unearned run. Toby Thomas bunted for a single to lead off the second inning. Thomas promptly stole second base, moved up to third on a throwing error and scored on a grounder for a 1-1 tie.

After Torres went four innings with just one hit allowed, Tanner Scott kept the rhythm going from the bullpen. Scott whipped his high-90s fastball past batter after batter for six strikeouts in three scoreless frames.

Kannapolis missed their best chance to score in the eighth inning after Tanner Chleborad put the first two runners on with a hit-by-pitch and walk. Michael Suiter failed to put down a sacrifice, striking out on a foul bunt attempt. Chleborad induced two straight groundouts to strand the go-ahead run on third base.

In the tenth inning, Reyes broke the 1-1 deadlock in Delmarva's favor. Ademar Rifaela drew a walk against reliever Devon Davis to put the go-ahead run aboard. Reyes drilled another double, this time to the right-center gap, scoring Rifaela from first base. The third baseman leads the team with 27 doubles and 36 extra base hits for the season.

Chleborad finished off the 2-1 victory in the bottom of the tenth. Pinch-hitter Louie Lechich doubled and moved up to third base on a groundout, but the tying run was stranded 90 feet away as Chleborad retired Michael Suiter. With three scoreless innings, Chleborad picked up the win for Delmarva

The Shorebirds will try for a series sweep in Friday night's finale at Kannapolis. Right-hander Matthew Grimes (9-6, 4.11) will try to become the Shorebirds' first start to double-digit wins, while Kelvis Valerio (1-2, 4.19) starts for Kannapolis. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at Intimidators Stadium.
