Round Rock Express News Release
DES MOINES, Iowa - A four-run first and a two-run third gave the Round Rock Express a lead they clung onto as they beat the Iowa Cubs 6-5 Thursday night at Principle Park. The win snapped a seven-game losing streak for the Express (30-38). The Cubs (36-31) still won the series, taking four of five games.
Jason Bourgeois led off the game with a single and advanced to second after Owaldo Navarro was hit by a pitch. Brian Bogusevic doubled bringing in Bourgeois, which advanced Navarro to third. Matt Kata then was hit by a pitch, loading the bases. Drew Meyer's two-out three-run double cleared the bases, giving the Express 4-0 lead.
Consecutive singles by Bogusevic and Kata started the third inning. Drew Lock had a one-out double bringing in Bogusevic and advancing Kata to third. Meyer's sacrifice fly extended the lead to 6-1 for the Express.
The Cubs countered with a pair of runs in the fourth and fifth.
Making his second rehab assignment start, Bud Norris, worked 4.2 innings, while allowing five runs on eight hits with three walks and three strikeouts.
Sergio Perez (3-1) picked up the win, working 2.2 innings but left in the bottom of the eighth with an apparent injury. He didn't allow a run on two hits with one walk and three strikeouts. Roy Corcoran (4) earned the save after 1.2 innings with one strikeout.
I-Cubs starter Jay Jackson (3-6) took the loss, giving up six runs on eight hits in 4.0 innings. James Russell threw 2.2 innings, not allowing a run with two walks and four strikeouts. Justin Berg and Scott Maine combined for 2.1 innings to finish the game, not allowing any runs on no hits.
Meyer had four RBI, going 1-for-2 with a walk.
Jason Bourgeois - making his first start since tweaking his left hamstring on June 10 - finished 2-for-4, scored a run, picked up a walk and swiped his 18th stolen base of the season.
Navarro, Bogusevic and Locke all had two hits, respectively. It was the 24th multiple-hit game of the season for Bogusevic, which leads the team.
Round Rock returns to The Dell Diamond on Friday for their fifth home stand of the season. They open with a four-game series against the Omaha Royals. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. CDT. Lefty Andy Van Hekken (3-4, 4.03 ERA) toes the rubber for the Express, while righty Philip Humber (4-4, 5.04) gets the ball for the Royals.
