
Jeff Mathis Completes Rehab

SALT LAKE CITY (June 17, 2010) - The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim announced today that catcher Jeff Mathis has completed his rehab assignment with Triple-A Salt Lake and will return to the Angels active roster. In other movement, the Bees placed right-handed pitcher Gabe DeHoyos on the Disabled List with a mouth infection and reassigned infielder Abel Nieves to Double-A Arkansas. Infielder Carlos Colmenares and right-handed pitcher Tim Kiely have been promoted to Salt Lake from Arkansas while right-handed pitcher Eddie McKiernan joins the Bees from Single-A Rancho Cucamonga.
Mathis, 27, appeared in nine games for the Bees during his rehab stint, hitting .242 with one home run and five RBI. He has appeared in 10 games for the Angels in 2010, hitting .324 with one home run and three RBI. In 2009, he hit .211 with eight doubles, five home runs and 28 RBI in 84 games for the Halos. The Marianna, Fla. native was originally selected by the Angels in the first round of the 2001 draft.
DeHoyos, 31, has appeared in 18 games of relief for the Bees in 2010, owning a 2-0 record with a 2.84 ERA and 36 strikeouts. In 2009, he appeared in 35 games (one start) in the San Diego Padres farm system, finishing with a 1-4 record, a 1.97 ERA and 45 strikeouts. The Carlsbad, N.M. native signed with the Angels as a free agent prior to the 2010 season.
Nieves, 24, has appeared in seven games for the Bees in 2010, hitting .188. In 35 games for the Travelers this season, he hit .210 with two doubles and seven RBI. The Maracay, Venezuela native was originally selected by the Angels in the 50th round of the 2005 draft.
Colmenares, 24, has appeared in 36 games for the Travelers in 2010, hitting .246 with three doubles, one triple and five RBI. In his previous stint with the Bees this season, he hit .333 with two doubles and one RBI. The Valencia, Venezuela native originally signed with the Angels as a free agent in 2004.
Kiely, 24, has appeared in 12 games (all starts) for the Travelers in 2010, owning a 4-5 record with a 4.42 ERA and 43 strikeouts. He split the 2009 season between Arkansas and Single-A Rancho Cucamonga, finishing with a 9-8 record, a 4.67 ERA and 92 strikeouts. The Swampscott, Mass. native was originally selected by the Angels in the 27th round of the 2008 draft.
McKiernan, 21, has appeared in 27 games of relief for the Quakes in 2010, owning a 2-1 record with a 3.42 ERA and 12 saves. In 2009, he appeared in 45 games for the Quakes, registering a 5-4 record with a 3.81 ERA. McKiernan also appeared in six games for the Bees last season, finishing with a 0-1 record and 6.75 ERA. The Pasadena, Calif. native was originally selected by the Angels in the 17th round of the 2007 draft.
