Sox Ride Six-Run Fifth to Victory, 7-5

June 17, 2010 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release

The Sky Sox rode a big fifth inning to victory on Thursday night at Security Service Field, plating six in the fifth inning en route to a 7-5 win.

Getting out to an early lead, the Sky Sox snuck away with a run in the second. Brad Eldred leading off the inning, the designated hitter reached and advanced to second on a throwing error by third baseman Matt Mangini. Cole Garner grounded out in the next at-bat, moving Eldred over to third, while a long Omar Quintanilla sacrifice fly to center allowed Eldred to score; 1-0.

Tacoma would capture the lead in the top of the fourth, however. Putting together a two-out rally, a Jack Hannahan walk followed by a Greg Halman single set up a Guillermo Quiroz two-RBI double; 2-1.

The lead was short-lived, however, as the Sky Sox broke the game wide open with a six-run bottom of the fifth. The team loading the bases with three singles to begin the inning, Kaz Matsui tied the game with a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Michael McKenry from third; 2-2. Jay Payton driving in Travis Metcalf with an RBI single, the game turned in favor of Colorado Springs in the next at-bat when Matt Mangini committed his second error of the match. Cole Garner hitting a routine grounder to third for a certain double play, Mangini sailed the ball into right field, allowing Dexter Fowler and Jay Payton to score. Mike Paulk added the inning's fifth run with a sacrifice fly two at-bats later, while Michael McKenry added the sixth score on a single to right, his second base hit of the inning; 7-1. The final four runs of the inning all unearned, Tacoma's misfortune significantly altered the complexion of the game.

Rallying with fervor, the Rainiers would tally one run in each of the next three innings, pulling to within two in the eighth. It was to no avail, however, as the Sox cruised to victory, 7-5.

With the win, the Sky Sox improved to 32-35 while the Rainiers fell to 33-32. Chaz Roe (5-7, 5.86) was credited with the win while Andy Baldwin (4-2, 4.42) took the loss.

Tomorrow, the Sky Sox will send Alan Johnson (6-2, 3.48) to the mound to take on Las Vegas lefty Mark Rzepczynski (1-3, 9.30). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.

Notables:

- Sky Sox starter Chaz Roe won his fourth consecutive start tonight, continuing to turn around what had previously been a rough season. Roe has been the Sky Sox' pitcher of record in all but one of his 13 starts, including losses in seven of his first eight decisions this year.

- Andrew Johnston's pickoff throwing error in the top of the eighth snapped a Sky Sox franchise record of 86.0 consecutive errorless innings. Had the team finished the game without the error, they would have tied the PCL record for consecutive errorless games at 10.
