Florida Everblades News Release
ESTERO, FL - The Florida Everblades (19-13-6) picked up a tie in the standings for the fifith straight game after falling 4-3 to the Gwinnett Gladiators (20-12-4) in a shootout Friday night at Germain Arena.
The Everblades thought they had victory in hand heading into the final minute of play leading 3-2, but a penalty called against the 'Blades with 46 seconds remaining in regulation set up the Gladiators with a chance to tie the game. With goaltender Sean Fields pulled to the bench for the extra attacker, Colin Stuart jammed a shot past Everblades goalie Craig Kowalski inside the left post with 12.4 seconds remaining in regulation sending the game to overtime.
After neither team scored in the five-minute overtime period, Gwinnett outscored Florida 1-0 in the shootout, after Brad Schell scored on Gwinnett's first attempt. Florida thought they had tied the shootout when their final shooter, Kris Vernarsky rang a shot off the underside of the crossbar.
The tie was made tougher to swallow for the Everblades because they had battled back from trailing 2-1 entering the third period. Reggie Berg notched a power play goal for Florida at 7:35 of the third period, and Brent McDonald gave the 'Blades the 3-2 lead shortly after notching his 10th goal of the season at 9:05.
Gwinnett held their lead of 2-1 since the mid point of the first period when Kris Goodjohn notched a pair of goals 3:21 apart midway though the stanza. Brad Church opened the scoring in the contest at 5:11 when he collected his 13th goal of the year.
Kowalski picked up a tie in the standings for Florida bringing his record to 11-6-5, after stopping 32 of 35 shots in regulation and overtime. Fields earned the win for the Gladiators with 29 saves in regulation and overtime. The Everblades saw their record go to 2-0-1 against Gwinnett this season. Florida is now 2-2 in shootouts, and the Gladiators are now 5-3 in shootouts.
The Everblades closed out the day 1-for-5 on the power play, while the Gladiators finished 1-for-4 on the man advantage.
