San Diego Looks To Extend Winning Streak To Six

SAN DIEGO — The red-hot San Diego Gulls look for their sixth straight win and to take sole possession of third place as they again host the struggling Las Vegas Wranglers tonight at the Sports Arena.

SERIES HISTORY: The Gulls and Wranglers have met four times so far this season with San Diego holding a 3-1-0 series edge. The two teams will clash three more times during the regular season. San Diego and Las Vegas met 10 times last season with the Gulls holding a 6-2-2 edge.

San Diego owns the all-time series match-up, posting a 9-3-2 record against its West Division rival. The Gulls are 5-1-0 all-time against the Wranglers at the Sports Arena.

LAST HEAD-TO-HEAD MEETING (JAN. 19 vs. LV): Mark Pederson scored once and added two assists, leading the red-hot Gulls to a 4-2 victory over the Wranglers, the club's fifth straight overall. Pederson notched assists on San Diego's first two goals and then sealed the game with a breakaway tally in the third period. Sylvain Deschatelets (1g, 1a) and Mike Garrow (2a) had multipoint games for San Diego as well. The Gulls grabbed a 1-0 lead late in the first period, before Las Vegas tied it early in the second. San Diego took a 2-1 lead moments later, but the Wranglers again scored the equalizer. Andrew Canzanello put the Blue and Orange up for good five minutes into the third period before Pederson put the nail in the coffin.

GULLS UPDATE: The Gulls (20-11-4) enter the day tied with the Fresno Falcons for third place in the West Division, nine points behind the first-place Bakersfield Condors and seven points back of the second-place Long Beach Ice Dogs... San Diego, however, has played three fewer games than both Bakersfield and Long Beach... The Gulls have won a season-high five straight games, outscoring their opponents 20-12 during that span... The Blue and Orange are 13-3-2 at home this season and 7-8-2 on the road... They have outscored their opponents 71-49 at the Sports Arena...

OTHER NOTES: Curtis Brown had his seven-game point streak snapped Wednesday. He had 11 points in that span (3g, 8a)... Brian Gornick has 14 points (10g, 4a) in his last 15 games... Deschatelets is in the midst of a six-game point streak, notching 10 points during that span (3g, 7a)... San Diego has five regulars out with injuries: Jonathon Shockey (separated shoulder), Sean Murphy (broken thumb), Sean O'Connor (charley horse), Max Birbraer (sprained shoulder) and Mathieu Chouinard (sore groin)... Darren Clark, who missed last game with an ankle injury, could be back in the lineup tonight... The Gulls, who still rank 26th in the ECHL on the penalty kill, have only allowed one power-play goal in their last four games...

LAS VEGAS UPDATE: Las Vegas (17-16-4) begins the day seventh in the West Division with 38 points, six behind the Gulls and Falcons for the final playoff spot... The Wranglers are one point behind the sixth place Idaho Steelheads and four points back of the fifth-place Alaska Aces... Las Vegas has dropped four of its last five games after racking up a five-game winning streak... Out of their 37 games this season, the Wranglers have played 23 one-goal games (9-10-4)... Marc Magliarditi is eighth in the ECHL with a 2.28 goals-against average and is tied for fourth in the league with a.934 save percentage... Dustin Johner leads the club with 30 points (16g, 14a)... Las Vegas set a team record Saturday in Bakersfield for being assessed 15 minor penalties...

TRANSACTIONS: Guillaume Fournier, who missed the last seven games with concussion-like symptoms, was activated from the injured list today... Trevor Koenig, sidelined the last 12 games with elbow tendonitis, was also activated from the injured list today... Birbraer and Chouinard were both placed on seven-day injured reserve today... They join Shockey and Murphy, who both remain on 30-day injured reserve... Canzanello was recalled to the American Hockey League's Cincinnati Mighty Ducks today... Wes Rypien was signed Wednesday... Pierre Dufour was released yesterday...
