San Diego Gulls News Release

SAN DIEGO — The San Diego Gulls announced Friday that All-Star defenseman Andrew Canzanello has been recalled to the American Hockey League's Cincinnati Mighty Ducks. Canzanello is still scheduled to be in the lineup for the Coors Light ECHL All-Star Game, which takes place Wednesday in Reading, Pa.

Canzanello, 23, is in his first professional season and is currently second among Gulls defensemen with 17 points (4g, 13a). The rookie defenseman came to San Diego this season after spending most of training camp with Cincinnati.

The 5-foot-11-inch, 190-pound native of Rochester, Minn. played the last four years for Colorado College, where he averaged 21 points a season. Canzanello led Colorado College defensemen with 26 points last season and was also ranked second among blue-liners in 2002-03 with 30 points. During his collegiate stint, he notched 84 points and 168 penalty minutes.

The Gulls also announced Friday that goaltender Trevor Koenig and rookie winger Guillaume Fournier have both been activated from the seven-day injured list. Netminder Mathieu Chouinard and left-winger Max Birbraer have both been placed on seven-day injured reserve.

Koenig, who is 10-5-2 with a 2.71 goals-against average and .907 save percentage, missed the last 12 games with elbow tendonitis. Fournier, who has 15 points (7g, 8a), sat out the last seven games with concussion-like symptoms.

Chouinard is 6-4-2 with a 2.69 GAA and .913 save percentage in 14 appearances. Birbraer leads the Gulls with 27 points (9g, 18a) in 34 games. Both are expected back in the lineup after the All-Star break.

The Gulls close out the first half of the season with home games Friday and Saturday night. Friday, they square off with the Las Vegas Wranglers again and Saturday they'll host the Pensacola Ice Pilots. Friday is the beginning of "Old-Time Hockey Weekend," presented by the San Diego Hall of Champions, and will feature a special pre-game ceremony with Gulls alumni. The first 6,000 fans in attendance to Saturday's contest will receive special "Old-Time-Hockey" Gulls T-shirts, also courtesy of the San Diego Hall of Champions. Both games start at 7:05 p.m.
