Evansville Otters News Release
(LOVES PARK, Illinois) - The Evansville Otters rallied for five runs in the top of the 8th and held on against a late Rockford RiverHawks fury in the bottom of the ninth inning for a one-run win.
Both the Otters and RiverHawks scored a pair of runs in the first inning and Evansville re-gained the advantage in the second on an RBI single from infielder Ryan Still.
Ahead 3-2, Otters pitcher Scott Kelley could not hold the lead. The righty allowed three runs in the bottom of the second and exited at the conclusion of that inning.
Down 5-3, Evansville tied the game on a Mike Durant two-run homer in the fifth, his second of the series, erasing a Rockford RiverHawks lead.
But again, the home team pushed two more runs across, plating a pair in the bottom of the sixth inning for another lead.
Up 7-5 in a see-saw baseball game, Rockford brought in reliever Brandon Garner for the 8th inning, who walked back to back hitters on eight pitches. Closer Brett Durand then entered the game, allowing another walk and a single to All-Star infielder Joe Spiers later in the inning. With the bases still loaded, Evansville outfielder Greg Alexander hit a three-run double to left field pushing the Otters up by two runs. A Mike Durant RBI single later in the inninghanded Evansville the 10-7 advantage.
Otters closer Eric Massingham pitched a scoreless eighth inning and got the first two outs in the ninth before encountering trouble. Four straight batters reached including an RBI double from Freddy Parejo and two fielding errors by the Otters. Leading just 10-9, Massingham then intentionally walked All-Star and league-leading .420 hitter Jake Eigsti to load the bases before retiring outfielder Cameron Satterwhite on a groundout to end the ballgame.
The Otters win 10-9 and improve to 12-30 with the victory. The RiverHawks lose on an opportunity to sweep and drop to 17-25 overall.
Evansville will now travel home tonight and begin a three-game series on Tuesday evening at Historic Bosse Field against the Traverse City Beach Bums. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
