Southern Illinois Miners News Release

MARION, Ill. - The Miners swept the ThunderBolts after a 5-3 victory over Windy City Monday night from Rent One Park. Darrin Tew grabbed the victory after entering the game in the sixth. Ben Shivers helped the Miners out of a jam in the ninth and closed the game out for the save. A three-run eight inning rally proved huge as the Miners held on late. Windy City starter Todd Privett was dominant early but took the loss to move his record to 5-3 on the season.

Eric Suttle and Nate Hall provided the fireworks with solo home runs respectively tying and giving the Miners the lead.

Erik Draxton entered the game in the ninth inning in with a 5-1 lead and allowed the first three batters he faced to reach base before he was lifted for Ben Shivers. The righty came on to retire the next three in order, extending his scoreless streak to 13 innings. Shivers struck out one batter, recording his second save of the year.

Thomas Campbell was very effective in a spot start, scattering six hits and not allowing a run after the Bolts manufactured a run in the first. Windy City scored first in the first inning on a Zach Aakus RBI sacrifice fly. Leadoff man Landon Anderson came around to score after reaching base to leadoff each game of the three-game set. Campbell struck out four and walked three batters, leaving with the Miners trailing 1-0 in the sixth.

Southern Illinois took their time to answer back, but did so in very timely fashion. Eric Suttle jumped all over the first pitch he saw to lead off the sixth inning for his third home run of the season. With the solo blast, the Miners knotted the game 1-1. An inning later, Nate Hall blasted his fifth home run of the season to give the Miners a 2-1 lead, their first of the season. Hall was named to the West Division All-Star team earlier in the day.

The Miners scored in three consecutive innings, as they plated three more runners in the eighth inning. The first run scored on Jereme Milons' two-strike line drive up the middle to scored Eric Suttle. Hall followed with an RBI single through the right side of the infield. He finished with two RBIs in the game. After Ken Gregory walked to load the bases, Sean Coughlin scored as a ground ball forced a play at the plate. He was called safe for the third run of the inning, pushing Southern Illinois' lead to 5-1 heading to the ninth inning.

Ryan Quigley worked in and out of a bases loaded jam in a scoreless eighth inning.

The Miners will begin their last six-game road trip of the first half when they travel to Joliet on Tuesday for a three-game series with the Slammers. 2011 All-Star David Harden (4-1, 2.01) will make the start for the Miners against Joliet righty and former Chicago Cub Billy Petrick (2-6, 4.63). It will be a 7:05 p.m. first pitch from Silver Cross Field in Joliet. Southern Illinois will conclude the road trip in Crestwood with a three-game series against the ThunderBolts beginning on Friday, July 8.
