Frontier League Announces All-Star Teams

Sauget, IL - Voting by managers, general managers, coaching staffs, and local media for the 2011 Frontier League All-Star Game has concluded with the first 24 members of the East and West squads announced.

The West Division will be the visitors in the contest and features a starting infield of Steve Alexander of the Normal CornBelters, Will Block of the Southern Illinois Miners, Joe Spiers of the Evansville Otters, and Chris McClendeon of the River City Rascals. Alexander currently leads the Frontier League with 13 home runs, Block leads with 15 doubles and ranks third with a .359 batting average, and Spiers leads with 24 stolen bases. Back-up infielders are Logan Parker of the Gateway Grizzlies, Chris Curley of the Florence Freedom, Tyler Keeble of the Normal CornBelters, and Nate Hall of the Southern Illinois Miners.

The starting West outfield is Cole Miles of the Florence Freedom, Stephen Holdren of the River City Rascals, and Alvaro Ramirez of the Normal CornBelters, with Asif Shah of the CornBelters as a reserve. Miles' .341 batting average ranks fifth in the Frontier League with his 21 stolen bases placing him second. Holdren is third with 11 home runs and tied for second with 38 RBI while Ramirez is tied for seventh with a .333 batting average.

River City's Danny Sawyer will start behind the plate for the West Division, with Sean Coughlin of Southern Illinois and Justin Holloway of Florence also on the team. Charlie Lisk of the Gateway Grizzlies, the 2010 Frontier League Most Valuable Player, is the designated hitter.

The West pitching staff features Zach Sterner, Derrick Miramontes, and Kirkland Rivers of the River City Rascals, Mark Brackman and Chris Enourato of the Gateway Grizzlies, David Harden and Ryan Zink of the Southern Illinois Miners, and Ryan Sheldon of the Normal CornBelters. Sterner, who was one batter away from the first perfect game in Frontier League history earlier this season, leads the Frontier League with a 1.73 ERA and is tied for third with five wins along with Brackman and Sheldon. Miramontes and Rivers both have four wins in relief for the Rascals to go along with six and five saves respectively. Harden (third) and Zink (sixth) are also in the league ERA leaders while Enourato has allowed only one earned run in 16 appearances.

The host East Division line-up features Erik Lis of the Joliet Slammers, Mike Torres of the Windy City ThunderBolts, Andrew Davis of the Lake Erie Crushers, and Jake Egisti of the Rockford RiverHawks around the infield. Egisti is pacing the Frontier League with his .420 batting average while Torres ranks seventh at .333. Lis is tied for sixth with eight home runs and Davis is tied for third with 14 doubles. They will be backed-up by Nick Mahin of the Lake Erie Crushers, Scott Lawson of the Washington Wild Things, Chris Wade of the Windy City ThunderBolts, and Luis Parache of the Rockford RiverHawks.

The starting West outfield includes J.T. Hall and Matt Brown of the Traverse City Beach Bums and Josh Flores of the Joliet Slammers, with the Slammers' Bobby Leeper the reserve outfielder. Hall's 11 home runs are tied for second overall while Brown is fourth with a .358 batting average and Flores ranks fifth with 14 stolen bases.

Behind the plate, Windy City's Zack Aakhus makes his third consecutive All-Star start. Aakhus won the FL batting title in 2010 and is currently second with a .360 average. He is joined by Lake Erie's Joel Collins and Washington's Blake Ochoa. Devin Shepherd of the ThunderBolts is the designated hitter.

Windy City's Todd Privett was the leading vote getter among pitchers and will be joined by Casey Barnes, Justin Hall, and Jhonny Montoya of the Washington Wild Things, Brian Banes and Scott Mueller of the Traverse City Beach Bums, Ryan Quigley of the Joliet Slammers, and Brett Durand of the Rockford RiverHawks. Privett is tied for third in both wins and strikeouts, while Banes is also third in victories. Barnes and Montoya are second and fourth in ERA, and Hall's 52.1 innings are tied for sixth. Closers Quigley (tied first), Mueller (third), and Durand (tied fourth) all are among the saves leaders.

The field managers who lead their divisions following play on Wednesday will work the All-Star Game, and they will name the final three players to each squad on Thursday.

The 2011 Frontier League All-Star game will take place at All Pro Freight Stadium in Avon, Ohio, home of the Lake Erie Crushers. All-Star events open with a Fan Fest and Home Run Derby on Tuesday, July 12 followed by the game at 7:05 pm on Wednesday, July 13.
