Grizzlies and Wild Things Split Doubleheader

SAUGET, IL - The Gateway Grizzlies and Washington Wild Things split a doubleheader on Monday at GCS Ballpark in front of 5,872, the third largest crowd of the season. The Grizzlies took game one 7-4 and Washington upended Gateway 9-3 in game two. The win in game one gave the Grizzlies the series win, their first since June 3-5.

In game one, the Wild Things scored three runs on two hits in the first inning off of Grizzlies starter Blake Barber. Chris Sidick drove in a run on a single, Derek Perren had a sacrifice fly and another Wild Things run scored on a Barber wild pitch.

Gateway (17-25) took a 4-3 lead in the fourth inning. After DJ Fitzgerald grounded out, Brian Harris ripped a single to left and Joe Agreste drove him home on his first triple of the season. Logan Parker and Charlie Lisk followed with back-to-back home runs, the eighth of the season for both Grizzlies.

Gateway tacked on three more runs on three hits in fifth to take a 7-3 lead. Agreste drove in a run on a single and Parker knocked home two with a double.

Nick Walters (1-1) got the win for Gateway, throwing a scoreless inning of relief. Richard Barrett went 1 2/3 to notch his first save of the summer.

In game two, Washington (17-24) scored once in the second and three times in the fifth to take a 6-0 lead. The big Washington third inning was highlighted by Eric Stephens and Luis Rivera home runs.

The Grizzlies scored twice in the third on an Agreste two-run single.

Washington tacked on a run in the fifth and two more in the sixth to get a 9-3 win and salvage a doubleheader split.

Ryan Juarez (0-1) took the loss for Gateway, giving up five runs in 2 2/3 in his first professional start.

The Grizzlies resume their six-game home stand on Tuesday with the first of three games against the Lake Erie Crushers. St. Louis native Brad Stone (0-2) will get the start for Gateway in game one of the series. First pitch is set for 7:05 on Tuesday night.
