Evansville Otters News Release

(SAUGET, Illinois) endash The Evansville Otters rallied late to force extra innings but lost for the second straight night on a walk-off hit.

After John Shelby hit a walk-off sacrifice fly on Wednesday, infielder Jonathan Johnson hit a game-winning RBI single to win the game in the bottom of the 11th inning on Thursday.

Evansville held an early 2-0 advantage on a home run from outfielder Deangelo Mack and would eventually pull ahead 5-2 later in the contest.

Down by three, Gateway would bat around in the bottom of the seventh inning, score five runs, and snatch the lead from Evansville.

Trailing 7-5, the Otters surged back in the top of the eighth. Shortstop Jon Karcich led off with a solo home run to right field and first baseman Nick Schwaner smashed a game-tying round-tripper to center field.

Through a gusting wind and sideways rain, the 7-7 game would move in to extra innings.

In the bottom of the 11th, Evansville native Adam Champion got in to a jam. After a walk, fielding error and hit by the pitch, the bases would become loaded with no one out.

Closer Eric Massingham then entered the contest, hoping to keep the game tied. The right-hander secured back to back strikeouts but Jonathan Johnson hit the game-winning RBI single to the right-center field gap for the victory.

The Grizzlies improve to 6-6 with the win as the Otters are currently 5-7.

Reliever Phillip Reamy (1-0) receives the win after pitching a scoreless top of the 11th in relief. The loss goes to Evansville lefty Adam Champion (0-1), allowing an unearned run in 1 1/3 innings.

Catcher Brett Chamberlain finished 2 for 4 in the game with three runs scored. Designated hitter Andrew Kuhn also recorded three hits during the defeat.

The Otters will now travel to play the River City Rascals in a weekend three game series. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. at T.R. Hughes Ballpark on Friday night.
