JOLIET SLAMMERS (6-6) @ LAKE ERIE CRUSHERS (4-7)

Thursday, May 31 - 6:05 p.m. CT

All Pro Freight Stadium - Avon, OH

Game #13 - Road Game #7 (6-6), (3-3)

RHP #47 Jeremy Tietze (0-1, 9.64 ERA) vs. LHP #39 Sam Strickland (0-1, 5.40 ERA)

Last time out...

The Joliet Slammers scored three runs in the second inning and held on from there as they knocked off the Lake Erie Crushers by a final score of 3-1 Wednesday night. Erik Lis drew a walk to start the second and Zach Mandelblatt took Lake Erie starter Eric Gonzalez-Diaz deep to give Joliet the 2-0 lead. Kyle Maunus followed that with his second home run of the season and the Slammers went up 3-0. Meanwhile rookie right-hander Steven Maxwell turned in his second consecutive excellent start as he went seven innings, striking out seven and giving up only one run to pick up the victory. Daniel Carela pitched a scoreless eighth and Amalio Diaz took care of business in the ninth to get his second save in as many nights. With the victory the Slammers move back to .500 on the season at 6-6. Ben Hewett picked up two more hits to raise his batting average to .419 on the season.

For Starters...

Jeremy Tietze is coming off a no-decision against the Evansville Otters on May 25 where he went five innings, giving up two runs on four hits. He walked four and struck out two. Tietze started his professional career in 2011 with the Slammers in the bullpen but pitched so well the team moved him to the starting rotation near the end of the season. He finished the regular season with a 7-1 record in 32 appearances, three of them starts. Then in the postseason he went 1-0 with a 1.69 ERA in two starts. The Slammers won both his outings in the playoffs.

That winning record...

With a victory tonight the Slammers would improve their record to 7-6 on the season. It would be the first time all year they've been above the .500 mark.

Going for the sweep...

A win tonight would be the first series sweep of the season for the Slammers. They swept eight series in the 2011 regular season.

What is with the West?

Joliet was in the East Division in 2011 but moved to the West Division in 2012 due to the addition of two teams to the league. So far the West has been the tougher division as the top three teams in the West (River City, Windy City and Schaumburg) have the same or better record than the first place team in the East (Southern Illinois). The Slammers are 4.5 games out in the West. They would only be 1.5 games back in the East.

Mandelbomb! Mandelbomb! Mandelbomb!

Zach Mandelblatt's three home runs on the season are tied for third most in the Frontier League.

Hewett is hitting...

Catcher Ben Hewett currently leads the Frontier League in batting average at .419. His OBP of .500 is currently tied for second in the league.

Lock 'em down!

The Slammers' bullpen has an ERA of 1.80 on the season in 40 innings. The pitching staff as a whole currently sports an ERA of 2.49, good for third in the league. Meanwhile, opposing batters are only hitting .218 against the Slammers, second lowest in the league behind Evansville (.169).

Erroneous!

The Slammers have surrendered the most unearned runs in the league (17) while committing 13 errors on the season (tied for fourth most in the league).

Movin' on up!

RHP Gaby Hernandez became the fourth Slammers player to move on to affiliated baseball when his contract was purchased by the Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday, May 21. He joins LHP Aaron Dott, Joliet native RHP Ryan Quigley and Darien native RHP Chris Pack as former Slammers in MLB organizations.
