
Miners Fall Short against Freedom

Marion, IL - The Miners fell short against the Florence Freedom as the Freedom won 7-4. Starter Daniel Calhoun got roughed up over 4.2 innings, as he allowed 5 earned runs off ten hits, walked two and struck out five.
The Miners got on the board first with a base hit and a RBI by Carlos Mendez to bring in Matt Fields in the bottom of the second inning. Florence scored a run in the top of the third but the Miners came right back in the bottom of the fourth inning. Carlos Mendez came through with his second base hit and a RBI as he gave the Miners a 2-1 lead.
Calhoun had been pitching well overall through four innings, but he got roughed up in the top of the fifth. He allowed four consecutive singles, a sacrifice fly and a two out single which knocked him out of the game. He allowed four runs in the inning. The Freedom added two more runs in the top of the sixth off reliever Ian Campbell to take a 7-2 lead.
The Miners were still fighting as they scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh. Cannon Lester got on base with a one out walk, Sean Coughlin moved him over to second base with a base hit. Jason Ganek pinch hit for Darian Sandford with two outs and came through with a two run single.
The Miners fell short as they lost 7-4. Ryan Quigley threw two scoreless innings. Anthony Collazo made his 2012 regular season debut and gave up two hits but no runs in the top of the ninth.
With the loss, the Miners fall to 7-5. Florence with the win, advances to 5-7. The Miners will welcome in Schaumburg tomorrow night for a three game series. Shawn Gilblair (1-0, 0.82 ERA) will be on the mound for the Miners. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm.
