Joliet Slammers News Release

(Avon, OH)- The Slammers completed their first sweep of the 2012 season on Thursday in an extra-inning 4-3 victory over the Lake Erie Crushers.

Joliet's Jeremy Tietze tossed six innings of shutout baseball before the Crushers pounced. Jason Taylor walked to lead off their rally, followed by a single by Rogelio Noris, and both runners advanced when Gered Mochizuki grounded to Tietze for the first out. Kellen Kulbacki then singled to bring around Taylor from third, and Brian Erie promptly singled to make it 2-0. In the next at-bat, Adrian Ortiz hit a sacrifice fly into left field to give Lake Erie the three-run lead.

The Slammers had a difficult time with the Crushers' pitching staff throughout the contest, but strung together a three-run rally of their own in the eighth. They loaded the bases when Brad Netzel reached on an error, Hector Pellot and Abel Nieves walked, and brought their first run across when Kyle Maunus drew a walk. Zach Mandelblatt hit a sacrifice fly afterwards, and David Fox tied the game on an RBI single.

After a scoreless ninth inning, Joliet and Lake Erie went into extras. In the tenth, Mandelblatt singled and David Fox doubled. With one out, the Slammers took the lead on a sacrifice fly from Sean Estand.

Tietze gave up just two runs through his six and one-third innings, while Jim Schult finished the seventh, Brian Smith was credited with the win pitching into the tenth, and Amalio Diaz entered for his third save in as many games.

The Slammers return home Friday to open a three-game series with the Washington Wild Things, first pitch scheduled for 7:05. Fans can listen live on AM 1340 WJOL with Aaron Morse and Greg Talbott calling the action.
