Grizzlies Walk off for Second Straight Night

Sauget, Ill. - Jonathan Johnson drove in Case Rigby to give the Gateway Grizzlies an 8-7 11-inning walk off win Thursday night at GCS Ballpark. The walk off was the second in as many days. Gateway (6-6) picked up a 4-3 walk off win on Wednesday night against Evansville (5-7) as well.
Gateway came from behind on a chilly, windy and rainy evening in Southwestern Illinois. Evansville jumped out to a 5-2 lead after six and a half innings, but the Grizzlies started a big rally in the bottom of the seventh.
After singles by Johnson and Vladimir Frias to start the seventh, John Shelby drove in Johnson. A sac bunt by Jerod Yakubik moved the runners over and Case Rigby was intentionally walked. With the bases loaded, Jon Myers ripped a two-run double to left field to tie the game at 5-5. After Sam Mahoney walked, Richie Jimenez Jr. gave the Grizzlies the lead on a two-RBI double. The Grizzlies scored five runs on five hits in the seventh.
Evansville wasted no time tying the game. Jon Karcich and Nick Schwaner hit back-to-back home runs off Grizzlies reliever Chris Enourato to tie the game at the start of the eighth inning.
Both teams couldn't muster a run until Johnson won it in the 11th inning.
Johnson went 4-for-7 to pace Gateway. Shelby went 3-for-6 while Myers finished 3-for-3 with two RBI.
Tim Brown got the start for Gateway and picked up a no-decision after giving up five runs in six and a third. Phillip Reamy (1-0) got the win after throwing a scoreless 11th inning.
The Grizzlies return to action on Friday night as they take on the Traverse City Beach Bums in the opener of a three-game set at GCS Ballpark. First pitch is set for 7:05.
