June 13, 2013 - Eastern League (EL1)
Akron RubberDucks News Release
AKRON, OHIO - The Akron Aeros announced today ESPN 850 WKNR's Tony Rizzo is the winner in the radio category of its first Media Madness Bobblehead Election. Rizzo's bobblehead, sponsored by Miller Lite, will be given out to the first 1,000 fans at Canal Park on Saturday, June 22 before the Aeros host the New Britain Rock Cats at 7:05 p.m.
Rizzo is a familiar face in the Cleveland sports media scene. Rizzo joined ESPN 850 WKNR in 2006 and he is the co-host of the popular "The Really Big Show" with Aaron Goldhammer from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. each weekday. He also hosts Fox 8's "The Tony Rizzo Show," which airs Sunday nights at 11 p.m. Rizzo spent nearly 14 years as Fox 8's sports anchor from the late 1990s until 2010.
"Tony Rizzo is one of Northeast Ohio's most-notable sports personalities and we think he is a perfect fit as the radio bobblehead winner," said Christina Shisler, Aeros' director of promotions. "Jim Donovan's bobblehead in the television category and his special appearance created a lot of excitement and buzz at Canal Park and I'm sure Rizzo's bobblehead victory will get fans talking."
The Media Madness Bobblehead Election started in March when fans were asked to nominate their favorite Northeast Ohio media personality in the categories of print, radio, and television. In April, fans voted from the list of nominees to determine a final top three in each category. The final round of voting started May 1 to determine winners.
The print winner will be given out Saturday, June 29. The winner will be announced on Thursday, June 20. Fans are encouraged to vote for the print finalist by emailing medianoms@akronaeros.com until noon on Thursday, June 20. To date, fans have voted close to 1,200 times in the final round and almost 1,700 times overall with the election still running in the radio and print categories.
Sixteen Northeast Ohio media members received nominations in the radio category and the other finalists were WNIR'S Howie Chizek, and long-time Cleveland Cavaliers broadcaster Joe Tait, who narrowly lost out to Rizzo.
As an added bonus on the bobblehead giveaway nights, all remaining Saturday games during 2013 season will have fireworks displays. Together with fireworks displays each Friday, the Aeros have 13 remaining fireworks games. June 22's display will have a "Frank Sinatra" theme.
