Curve Take 2 in New Britain

June 13, 2013 - Eastern League (EL1)
Altoona Curve News Release

NEW BRITAIN, Conn.- Stolmy Pimentel and David Bromberg each turned in gems on the mound as the Altoona Curve swept a doubleheader in New Britain taking game one 7-1 and game two 3-1. The pair of wins snapped a three-game losing streak for the Curve.

Pimentel (4-3) turned in a great outing on the mound for the Curve in the first game of the doubleheader. He walked the first two men he faced, but then induced a double-play off the bat of Nate Hanson, and retired Josmil Pinto on a ground out to escape the first inning unscathed.

Pimentel settled in after the first inning striking out the side in the bottom half of the third inning. The right-hander took a no-hitter into the fifth inning, before Reynaldo Rodriguez ripped a ground ball through the infield and into left for a single. All told Pimentel worked a seven-inning complete game allowing just one run on three hits.

The Curve offense broke the game open with a big four-run third inning. Carlos Paulino and Justin Howard each singled to start the frame and moved up 90 feet on a sacrifice bunt from Gift Ngoepe. Drew Maggi put the Curve in front for good with a line drive double to left field that made it 2-0. After a walk to Adalberto Santos, Alex Dickerson made it a 4-0 contest with a two-run double of his own.

Jarek Cunningham tacked on another run with a solo home run to left field in the top half of the sixth inning. The home run was number 12 on the season for Cunningham and pushed the Curve lead to 5-0.

Altoona (27-37) picked up two more runs in the seventh inning to finish off the scoring in game one, a 7-1 victory.

The third inning continued to be the magical frame for the Curve in game two as well. Oscar Tejeda blasted his first home run of the season over the left field fence on a 3-0 pitch from Rock Cats starter Trevor May that put the Curve in front 2-0.

New Britain cut the lead in half with a run in the bottom half of the inning getting to Bromberg with a sacrifice fly from Miguel Sano. Bromberg (3-6) was brilliant on the mound in game two setting a season-high in strikeouts for a Curve starter fanning 12 over six innings of work.

Mel Rojas Jr. plated an insurance run for the Curve in the top half of the seventh inning with an RBI-single that made it a 3-1 game.

Luis Sanz came on in the seventh inning and picked up where Bromberg (3-6) left off striking out the side to earn his third save of the season. The combined 15 strikeouts are also the most that the Curve had totaled in a game this season.

RHP Casey Sadler (6-4, 3.20) will head to the mound as the Curve look for a sweep in New Britain on Thursday night at 6:35 p.m. The right-hander will make his first start of the season against the Rock Cats and is coming off a quality start against the Binghamton Mets on June 8. He will be opposed by LHP Logan Darnell (5-5, 2.90). Darnell made one start last season against the Curve and suffered the loss on June 19, 2012 when he allowed four earned runs in five innings of work.

Airtime on ESPN Radio 1430, WVAM and the Curve Radio Network is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. For tickets and more information on the next Curve homestand which begins this Friday, June 14, call 877.99.CURVE, visit AltoonaCurve.com or stop by the ticket windows at Peoples Natural Gas Field.
