Trenton Thunder News Release

(Trenton, NJ) - Red-hot Binghamton scored four runs on eight hits in the first three innings and the Mets pitching took over from there en route to a 6-1 win over the Trenton Thunder Wednesday night at ARM & HAMMER Park. The first-place Mets improved to 9-1 this month and moved 7.0 games ahead of Trenton in the standings.

Darin Gorski, Scott Atchison (1-0), John Church and Adam Kolarek combined to allow only one run (scoring in the first inning) and six total hits for the Mets on the mound. Atchison, on Major League injury rehab for the New York Mets, earned the victory after tossing a perfect fifth inning with two strikeouts.

Binghamton struck early against Trenton starter Matt Tracy (4-4), scoring two runs in the first and one in the second. Allan Dykstra's RBI single highlighted an eight-batter first inning, while Travis Taijeron's two-out double in the second made the score 3-1 Mets.

Fred Lewis relieved Tracy in the third and allowed three runs of his own in 2.1 innings of work. Wilfredo Tovar's RBI single past a drawn-in infield coupled with Tyler Austin's throwing error allowed a pair of runs to score in the fifth and extend the lead to 6-1.

Francisco Rondon tossed 3.1 scoreless innings following Lewis and Tommy Kahnle shut down the Mets for the final 1.1 innings. On the night, Binghamton out-hit Trenton 12-to-6, while the Thunder committed three errors leading to two unearned runs.

The Mets now will go for the sweep with game three scheduled for 7:05 pm Thursday night. Left-hander Nik Turley (5-4, 4.40) is expected to start for the Thunder against righty Cory Mazzoni (2-1, 4.06).
