Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release
LAST GAME: The B-Mets took an early lead and never looked back as they defeated the Thunder, 6-1 in a wire-to-wire victory Wednesday night. In his first start with the B-Mets in 2013, Darin Gorski threw 4.0 innings and gave up one run and four hits in a no-decision. The bullpen combined for 5.0 scoreless innings of relief. Scott Atchison threw a perfect fifth inning to pick up the victory in a Major League rehab assignment, and both John Church and Adam Kolarek tossed two scoreless innings to finish the game. Offensively, the bottom three hitters in the lineup each had two hits. The B-Mets have now won three straight games over the Thunder in 2013.
BINGHAMTON STARTING PITCHER: RHP Cory Mazzoni makes his seventh start of the season for the B-Mets, and his third against Trenton. He got a no-decision against the Thunder on June 6, and threw 6.2 innings allowing three runs. He struck out a career-high 11 batters in the game, and has struck out 20 in his last two starts. On May 6, he was tagged with the loss against Trenton after allowing five runs in 3.0 innings. In the starts on the road in 2013, Mazzoni is 1-1 with a 4.40 ERA. Earlier this season, Cory missed 24 games on the disabled list with right elbow neuritis.
TRENTON STARTING PITCHER: LHP Nik Turley makes his 12th start of the season for the Thunder, and his second against Binghamton. He has lost each of his last two starts. On June 8 against Richmond, he allowed four runs over 5.0 innings to fall to 5-4 on the season. Against Binghamton on May 8, he was tagged with the loss after giving up three runs on five hits over five innings. At home this season, Turley is 4-2 with a 3.50 ERA in six starts. After a rough April, Turley pitched much better in the month of May. He went 3-1 with an ERA of 2.52 in five games (four starts). In 2013, opponents are hitting .231 against him. Lefty's are hitting .125 (7-for-56) against Turley. He was drafted in the 50th round by the Yankees in the 2008 draft.
GREAT START TO JUNE: The B-Mets are 9-1 through the first 10 games of June. As a team they are hitting .304 and have scored 61 runs this month (6.1 per game). Cesar Puello leads the league in batting average in June (.515) and has nine extra base hits. Danny Muno ranks second in the league this month with 14 RBI. The pitching staff has also been strong on the mound; they have posted a 2.40 ERA.
ANOTHER POSSIBLE SWEEP: A win on Thursday would give the B-Mets their third series sweep of the season. It would be their second consecutive sweep as well (@ ALT). The last time Binghamton swept two straight series was 8/19/11 - 8/24/11 when they beat Portland and Erie in consecutive series. Binghamton hasn't lost a series since losing two-of-three to Trenton from May 6-8.
SIX-IN-A-ROW: Binghamton is currently on a season-long six-game winning streak. This is the longest winning streak since 8/26/11 - 9/1/11. The B-Mets last won seven consecutive games 8/18/11 - 8/24/11.
BEST RECORD SINCE 2004: With a record of 40-25, Binghamton is 15 games over .500 for the first time since September 1, 2004 (76-61).
WIN NUMBER 40: A win on Wednesday would be the fewest number of games (66) for Binghamton to reach 40 wins since 1994 (66 games). In 1992, the B-Mets reached 40 wins in 63 games.
THE STREAK CONTINUES: Josh Rodriguez has hit safely in 23 consecutive games, stretching back to May 13. He is hitting .427 (38-89) during the streak, and has 17 RBI. He is on the longest Eastern League hitting streak since Alex Romero (NBR) had a 23-game hit streak in 2005. During the stretch, Rodriguez's batting average risen from .241 to .320.
NEXT GAME PREVIEW: The B-Mets return home for a three-game series against the Bowie Bay Sox. First pitch on Friday is set for 7:05 PM as RHP Logan Verrett takes the mound against RHP Tyler Wilson.
