Lakewood, N.J. - The Delmarva Shorebirds committed three costly errors in the sixth and seventh innings and Lakewood came back to win the finale 5-4 at FirstEnergy Park on Wednesday night. Four of the five Lakewood runs were unearned. The Shorebirds dropped the series three games to one.
The Shorebirds grabbed an early lead in the first inning. John Ruettiger reached on a leadoff walk and scored on a groundout to short by Michael Ohlman, his 48th RBI of the year.
The Shorebirds used five walks by Ervis Manzanillo to score three runs in the third to take a 4-0 lead. Mike Mooney drew a leadoff walk. Then, Riley Hornback and Ty Kelly drew back-to-back walks. Ohlman drew a walk to pick up his 49th RBI of the year. Then, Jacob Julius walked to force in Hornback. Garabez Rosa hit a sacrifice fly to left field to stretch the lead to 4-0.
Matt Bywater held the BlueClaws scoreless over the first five innings. In the sixth, Bill Rice reached on a leadoff walk. Then, Rosa misplayed a hard one hopper to put two runners aboard. Later in the inning, Jim Murphy hit a two-run single to cut the deficit to 4-2. After a single by Cameron Rupp, Anthony Hewitt singled into center field to trim the deficit to 4-3.
In the seventh, Lakewood took their first lead of the night. With runners at second and third, Carlos Alonso hit a chopper to third and Ty Kelly threw home and the ball popped off the glove of Hornback to the backstop, allowing both runners to score to give Lakewood a 5-4 lead.
