Hickory Crawdads News Release
CHARLESTON, SC - The 1st-Half Northern Division Champion Hickory Crawdads won their third straight game, 3-2, for the series win against the Charleston RiverDogs, before 3,192 fans at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park on Wednesday night.
The Crawdads (69-51, 29-23) jumped in front early with two runs in the top of the first against LHP Vidal Nuno (L, 1-1). With 2B Odubel Herrera at first base and two down, 3B Alejandro Selen extended his hitting streak to 11 straight games with an RBI triple that brought in Herrera for the 1-0 lead. Selen trotted home when DH Tomas Telis promptly ripped an RBI base hit up the middle, putting Hickory in front, 2-0.
LHP Will Lamb made his Crawdads debut and logged 4.2 scoreless innings on the mound, scattering only two hits and three walks, while striking out four in the no-decision. RHP Jose Monegro (W, 1-0) took over to retire the final out in the fifth inning, and put in 2-1 total relief frames, depite the RiverDogs (48-74, 22-30) getting on the board in the sixth.
DH Shane Brown singled to start the inning, before Monegro retired the next two batters. However, 1B Kevin Mahoney drove an RBI triple to deep center field, plating Brown and cutting the deficit to 2-1.
The 'Dads wasted no time extending the lead back to multiple runs against LHP Francisco Rondon in the top of the seventh. With two down and the bases empty, RF Josh Richmond belted a solo home run to left-center field, making it 3-1.
The RiverDogs again pulled within one run of tying it on a two-out RBI double in the bottom of the seventh by SS Jose Toussen, but Monegro navigated through the rest of the frame with Hickory in a one-run lead. RHP Jorge Marban (S, 2) slammed the door with two perfect innings in the eighth and ninth, striking out five batters in total, including all three in the bottom of the ninth, to wrap up the 3-2 win for the Crawdads.
