Savannah Sand Gnats News Release
SAVANNAH, GA - The Asheville Tourists scored four times in the top of the sixth inning on their way to a 5-2 win over the Sand Gnats Wednesday night at Historic Grayson Stadium. The Tourists (28-24/59-62) earned a split of the four-game series with the first place Gnats (32-19/71-49) to keep their slim playoff hopes alive with 18 games to play in the half.
The Tourists began the sixth inning with six straight singles against Savannah starter Erik Goeddel and reliever Luis Rojas to produce four runs, turning a 1-1 tie into a 5-1 game. Goeddel, who gave up the first four singles in the inning, was charged with five runs, all earned on six hits in his five innings of work to fall to 2-3 this year.
The Gnats had evened the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning. After singles from second baseman J.B. Brown and centerfielder Darrell Ceciliani, left fielder Alonzo Harris brought home Brown with a safety squeeze bunt up the first base line. Harris finished 2-4 with a pair of bunt hits. Ceciliani was 2-for-4 with a double.
Catcher Blake Forsythe lined a solo home run just to the right of straight away center field in front of the video board leading off the ninth for Savannah's second run to make the score 5-2.
The Gnats will begin a four and a half game series in Greenville Thursday night. The teams will begin the series by resuming Saturday's suspended game, which was halted by rain with the Drive leading the Gnats 1-0 through four and a half innings. After the conclusion of the suspended game, which is scheduled for nine innings, the two teams will play Thursday's regularly scheduled game, which is now set for set for seven innings. The suspended game will resume at 5 pm. The radio broadcast on News/Talk 630 and sandgnats.com will begin at 6:00 pm.
