Stockton Ports News Release

STOCKTON, Calif. - It was another day and another excruciating loss for the Stockton Ports on Tuesday night at Banner Island Ballpark. For the second time in three games, the Ports took a 5-3 loss into the ninth inning and saw it slip away. Stockton committed five errors on the night and two critical ones in the ninth as they lost to the Visalia Rawhide by a final of 6-5.

The Ports built a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first courtesy of four walks in a row issued by Rawhide starter Cody Reed to start the inning. Joe Bennie drew the fourth walk with the bases loaded to bring in a run and Sandber Pimentel followed with a sacrifice fly to left field to make it a 2-0 lead. Stockton failed to get a hit in the inning and Reed escaped having allowed just the two runs.

Visalia cut the Stockton lead in half in the second. With one out, Henry Castillo doubled and scored two batters later on an RBI single by Chuck Taylor to make it a 2-1 game.

Ports starter Heath Fillmyer would be victimized by a pair of errors in the fifth. With one out, Robelys Reyes hit a tapper up the first base line that was fielded by Ports catcher Argenis Raga. His throw to first was dropped by Pimentel, allowing Reyes to reach. Colin Bray followed with a single to right. Right fielder Seth Brown fired a throw to third that skipped passed Jose Brizuela, allowing Bray to take an extra 90 feet to second. Victor Reyes followed with an RBI single to right and Domingo Leyba provided a sac-fly to center that gave the Rawhide a 3-2 advantage.

The last two runs allowed by Fillmyer were unearned as he went on to receive a no-decision, allowing three runs (one earned) on eight this while striking out six.

Reed, meanwhile, did not allow a run nor a walk after the first inning and completed five full frames, allowing two runs on two hits while striking out seven.

After Liam Hendricks set the side down in order in the top of the seventh while throwing nine pitches, six for strikes, Stockton's bats came to life in the bottom of the inning. With two outs and the bases empty, the Ports had four straight reach base facing Rawhide reliever Gabe Speier. Richie Martin singled, Melvin Mercedes walked, James Harris singled to left field to tie the game and Joe Bennie extended his hit streak to 11 games with a two-run double to right-center to give Stockton a 5-3 lead.

Speier would allow three runs on three hits in two innings of work.

Koby Gauna came on to start the eighth and retired the first two batters before giving up a two-out single to Castillo. Lou Trivino (0-3) was then summoned from the bullpen and got Oscar Hernandez to foul out to end the inning.

Trivino came back out to start the ninth and began the inning by hitting Taylor and allowing a single to Robelys Reyes to put two aboard with nobody out. Bray would then attempt to lay down a sacrifice bunt but bunted the ball right back to the mound. Trivino fielded the ball and went to throw to third but threw errantly down the left field line. Allowing Taylor to score and putting runners at second and third. After Reyes was intentionally walked, Trivino was lifted for Carlos Navas. Navas faced Leyba with the bases loaded and nobody out and gave up an infield single up the first base line that tied the game at 5-5. Dawel Lugo followed and hit a pop-fly to shallow right. Bennie, the second baseman, went out to make the catch with the infield fly rule invoked. Bennie dropped the ball, and though the batters was automatically out, the runners still advanced as Bray scored the go-ahead run to make it a 6-5 Visalia lead. Navas would record back-to-back strikeouts to close out the inning.

Trivino suffered the loss after allowing three runs (one earned) in a third of an inning. Miller Diaz (1-1), who struck out the side in the bottom of the eighth, picked up his first win of the season.

Gabriel Moya (SV, 1) set the side down in order in the ninth inning to notch his first save of the season with Visalia.

Stockton has now dropped 10 straight home games as they fall to 7-24 on the season at Banner Island Ballpark. The Ports have dropped eight straight overall and 18 of their last 21.

Following the day off on Wednesday, the Ports travel to Bakersfield to begin a four-game set with the Blaze on Thursday night at Sam Lynn Ballpark. Casey Meisner (0-9, 4.55 ERA) makes the start for Stockton in the series opener, opposed by Bakersfield left-hander Eddie Campbell (5-4, 5.17 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:45 p.m. PDT.
