San Jose Giants News Release
San Jose, CA - Four San Jose Giants players have been named to the California League All-Star team and will participate in the 2016 All-Star Game against the Carolina League All-Stars on June 21 in Lake Elsinore, California. RHP Sam Coonrod, SS C.J Hinojosa, RHP Rodolfo Martinez and 1B Chris Shaw were selected to represent the organization in the 20th All-Star contest between the California and Carolina Leagues. 25 players from the California League were named to the All-Star squad.
"I am incredibly proud of each of our four players that were selected to the All-Star team," said Lipso Nava, San Jose Giants Manager. "The opportunity to represent both the California League and the San Francisco Giants against All-Stars from the Carolina League is a tremendous honor for each of these guys. These four individuals work hard work day and in day out and this recognition is well deserved."
Sam Coonrod receives this recognition just a day after being named the California League Player of the Month for the month of May where he went 5-0 in five starts. Coonrod headlines the Giants staff that currently boasts the third-best team ERA in the California League. In ten starts, the San Francisco Giants 2014 5th Round Pick has fashioned a 5-3 record over 52 2/3 innings with a 2.26 ERA for the San Jose Giants. He is currently second in the California League in ERA and third in opposing batting average (.208).
Chris Shaw has shined in the cleanup spot all year long as his name is found atop league leaderboards in several categories. The San Francisco Giants first round draft pick in 2015 out of Boston College, Shaw is second in the league slugging percentage (.553), second in home runs (12), second in doubles (18), third in RBI's (41), and third in total bases (114). In 54 total games, the Giants first baseman has hit .291 by collecting 60 hits (second on the team) and 20 walks.
Shortstop C.J Hinojosa has impressed both at the plate and in the field with his strong arm during the first half of the 2016 season. A consistent feature in the middle of the San Jose Giants lineup, Hinojosa's .330 average is second in the league and his .413 on-base percentage is fourth in the California League through 53 games. Always a tough at bat, the 11th Round Draft pick in last year's 2015 draft leads the team in hits (65) and has struck out just 31 times in 197 at bats while collecting 30 walks putting him fifth in the league.
Out of the bullpen, Martinez has been one of the best relievers in the California League during the first half of the season. The right-hander features a 0.74 ERA in a league-leading 25 appearances. Martinez is currently alone at the top of the league with 16 saves, with the next best at nine. Martinez has struck out 24 batters compared to just eight walks in 24 1/3 innings.
The 2016 All-Star Game will be the 20th contest between the California and Carolina Leagues. The California League won last year's contest held in Rancho Cucamonga as they lead the all-time series over the Carolina League with a record of 9-8-2. This year's event will be hosted by the Lake Elsinore Storm on Tuesday, June 21 at The Diamond. The day will also feature the Inaugural California League Hall of Fame Class ceremony, with former San Jose Bee, George Brett, representing the San Jose Franchise.
The San Jose Giants embark on a four game road trip against the Modesto Nuts on Wednesday, June 9. San Jose's next homestand begins on Monday, June 13 and will feature exciting promotions such as #SBStrong Night on June 14, George Brett Night on Saturday, June 18 and Father's Day on Sunday, June 19. Throughout the season, San Jose Giants tickets can be purchased online at sjgiants.com, at the Municipal Stadium box office, or by calling 408.297.1435.
