Boyd, Stubbs Named Cal League All-Stars

Lancaster JetHawks News Release

LANCASTER, Calif. - The California League announced its 2016 All-Star roster on Wednesday, and outfielder Bobby Boyd and catcher Garrett Stubbs were selected to represent the JetHawks in the California League vs. Carolina League All-Star game in Lake Elsinore, Calif.

Boyd has been one of the league's best top-of-the-order hitters this season. The speedy leadoff man leads the Cal League with 26 stolen bases in just 31 attempts and is pacing a JetHawks club that has more steals (110) than any other in the league. A former West Virginia Mountaineer, Boyd ranks third in the league with a .323 batting average and seventh with 39 runs scored.

The all-star selection is the second for Boyd who was named to the 2014 New York-Penn League All-Star team in his first professional season after being drafted in the eighth round by the Astros earlier that year.

A native of Silver Springs, Md., Boyd has added power to his arsenal this season. After hitting just one home run in his first two professional seasons, the left-handed hitter has cracked five this year. He leads the JetHawks with two leadoff home runs and hit a grand slam en route to a career-high 9-RBI game in Lancaster's 29-11 win over Stockton on May 26.

Stubbs has jumped on to the scene as one of the Cal League's best catching prospects and has gotten it done both behind the plate and at the plate this season. Living up to his 2015 Johnny Bench Award as the NCAA's best catcher, Stubbs has thrown out 65% (13x20) of potential base stealers this season, the top mark in the league, and has helped make the JetHawks the toughest team to run against in the circuit.

Offensively, the USC-product and Del Mar, Calif. native has delivered in the middle of Lancaster's lineup. He ranks third in the league with a .319 average, second in the league with a .420 OBP and his .931 OPS ranks second as well. He has walked (22) as many times as he has struck out (22) and has stolen nine bases while only being caught twice.

Stubbs launched his first professional home run on May 7 and has totaled six homers on the season including a two-home run game on May 18. He leads all Cal League catchers with 69 total bases and authored a club-best 16-game hitting streak from April 16 to May 19.

Boyd and Stubbs will play alongside members of the other nine Cal League teams against the Carolina League's best on Tuesday, June 21 at The Diamond. First pitch is 6:30 p.m. Tickets to the game, and other all-star festivities, can be purchased by visiting stormbaseball.com.
