Blaze Drop Hammer on Giants to Complete Sweep

June 8, 2016 - California League (CalL1)
Bakersfield Blaze News Release

Tuesday's win in San Jose served notice to the rest of the Cal League that Menchaca's squad has finally arrived.

Austin Wilson's clutch two out triple down the right field line got the offense in gear and four Bakersfield (30-28) pitchers neutralized the Giants (33-25) attack in a 7-3 triumph.

Wilson's (3-3) busy night at the plate started when he lit a fire in the fourth inning.

DJ Snelten (L, 3-5) threw a fastball on the outer half of the plate allowing Wilson to extend his arms and drive it into trouble. A triple into the right field corner scored Kyle Petty and Tyler Marlette giving the Blaze a 3-0 lead. The Blaze had already been up a run courtesy of a Snelten balk to plate Petty in the second and now Wilson's stick gave them an even bigger advantage.

Not going away quietly, San Jose answered in the bottom of the fourth when Cristian Paulino doubled into the left field corner to score Jose Vizcaino Jr. and Daniel Carbonell to make it 3-2 Blaze.

Like they have done throughout the 7-game road trip, Bakersfield immediately responded.

Daniel Torres led the fifth inning off with a single to center. After Snelten's wild pitch got Torres to second, Drew Jackson came to bat. Jackson hit a ball that nearly squeezed through a hole on the left side of the infield, but C.J Hinojosa's diving stop at shortstop allowed him to throw Torres out at as he tried to advance over to third base. After the out was recorded, Gianfranco Wawoe singled into right field giving the Blaze runners at the corners with one out. With the Cal League RBI Leader, Chantz Mack at the plate and Kyle Petty on deck, Snelten was stuck in quite a predicament.

Snelten rolled the dice and elected to attack Mack, but the gamble didn't pay off. Mack's dagger went the opposite field and down the third base line scoring two more runs to extend the lead back up to three.

That was more than enough for the Blaze, but Petty singled home Mack for good measure to make it 6-2.

The win gives Bakersfield eight consecutive victories as they completed their 7-game road trip by going a perfect 7-0. The club has now won 12 of their last 14 away from Sam Lynn Ballpark and 18 of 25 overall.
