Lancaster JetHawks News Release
LANCASTER, Calif. - Garrett Stubbs hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth to cap a late comeback by the JetHawks, as they secured a four-game sweep of the Modesto Nuts with a 3-2 victory on Tuesday night at The Hangar.
The win was a season-high seventh in a row for Lancaster (32-26). With the game tied 2-2 heading to the bottom of the ninth, Brooks Marlow led off with a single and pinch runner Aaron Mizell advanced to second on a wild pitch. Johnny Sewald drew a walk, before Luis Reynoso moved the runners up with a sacrifice bunt.
After Bobby Boyd was intentionally walked and Drew Ferguson struck out, the bases were loaded with two out for Stubbs. He lined a 2-2 pitch from Modesto closer Jerry Vasto (0-1) into center field to spark a walk-off celebration for the second straight night, after Antonio Nunez ended Monday evening's game with a walk-off single of his own.
Parker French tossed seven shutout innings for Modesto (21-37), but ran into trouble with one out in the eighth. Stubbs singled and Bryan Muniz followed with a two-run homer to the opposite field in right-center to tie the game. French allowed nine hits in 7.2 innings, walking one and striking out five.
The game was scoreless until the fifth, when Dom Nunez led off against Lancaster starter Rogelio Armenteros with his first home run of the season. The Nuts added an insurance run in the top of the eighth on an RBI double by Luis Jean.
Armenteros tossed 6.2 innings, a high for any JetHawk this season, and struck out nine. He allowed three hits, one run, and walked one. Ryan Deems (2-0) earned the win in relief. The right-hander retired all four batters he faced.
Lancaster finished 21-9 in a stretch of 30 games in 29 days.
The JetHawks have the day off on Wednesday before opening a seven-game road trip and the first of a three-game series with the Visalia Rawhide on Thursday night at Recreation Park. Trent Thornton (2-2) will start for Lancaster. First pitch is 7:00 p.m.
The JetHawks are celebrating their 20th anniversary season in Lancaster. Great ticket packages and group events are on sale now at jethawks.com or by calling (661) 726-5400.
