FLORENCE, KY - Three errors ended up costing the Florence Freedom three runs as they fell by one, 6-5, Friday night at Champion Window Field.

The Freedom had a chance to tie the game after Billy Mottram drove home Erold Andrus in the bottom of the ninth inning to cut the Miners lead to one. But Justin Pickett grounded back to the pitcher Mike Damchuck and the Miners prevailed.

Jonathan Miller started for the Freedom and surrendered a two-run homer to Joey Metropoulos in the first inning to make it 2-0 Miners. Southern Illinois added to their lead in the second inning when Tim Grogan failed to field a ground ball at first for an error with one out. The next two Miners knocked in unearned runs with a single and sacrifice fly.

Miller (1-1) took the loss going 6.1 innings, his longest outing of the season, giving up five runs, three earned on nine hits with six strikeouts.

With the Miners leading 4-0 entering the bottom of the second inning, Brad Hough drove Ryan Basham in with a sacrifice fly to make it 4-1. Three batters later Grogan drove home two with the bases loaded to trim the Miners lead to one.

Southern Illinois added a run in the third on Jeremy Millons (9) solo blast to make it 5-3. Florence countered with an RBI single by Jay Johnson to bring it back to a one run game in the fourth.

It stayed that way until the eighth, when the Miners had runners at second and third with two outs and ended up scoring a run on Mottram's throwing error to first. The potential inning ending ground ball proved to be the game winning run as Andrew Sweet scored from third.

The Freedom (21-24) enter game two of the series with the Miners (26-20) on a five game skid, their longest of the season. Joe Augustine (2-3) got the win for the Miners as he went five innings in the start. Damchuck picked up his second save of the season.

First pitch Saturday night is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. with it being a Kiss 107 Ladies Night at the park. There will be give-a-ways from Sassy Salon, Massage Envy and Schulz and Sons Diamond Jewelers throughout the night.
